Canada Line Tour

This fall the Canada Line, Metro Vancouver’s latest Skytrain line, will link the downtown core to Richmond Centre and the Vancouver International Airport. I was fortunate enough to get a sneak peek of the line this morning as a small group of us rode from Waterfront station to each of the other terminus stations in Richmond.

You can view the rest of my photos on Flickr and another item of note is that cell reception for Telus and Rogers is spotless throughout the tunnels as they both have setups down there.

This weekend the Canada Line / Shop The Line is presenting the Granville Showcase. Granville Street is re-opening after its construction phase (although there’s still some landscaping going on). I’ll be there for a short while during Blogathon to judge a contest with @CatherineBarr over at The Edge around 4:00pm.

As a part of the event on July 25th, there will also be an open house at the Vancouver City Centre station on Granville & Georgia from 2:00pm – 7:00pm.

Update from News 1130: “The new Canada Line rapid transit line will open for service on Monday, August 17th. People will be able to ride Canada Line between Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver, Richmond City Centre and YVR. And to celebrate, you’ll be able to ride for free from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm on August 17th.”

Update from Google: The Canada Line is now searchable in Google Maps, under directions.

    Kinda jealous of your tour, I will say. But, I don’t really understand why translink has branded the canada line in light-blue and green. Wouldn’t red have been the obvious choice? We already have a blue line (Expo) and they should save green for the future Evergreen line to Coquitlam.

    @CL Maybe Jhenifer can answer that for you a bit better than I can. I do know that it wasn’t always called the Canada line though, originally it was the “RAV” line (Richmond, Airport, Vancouver). It may also be the colours translink is going with, as theirs are currently blue and yellow.

    Hey CL & Rebecca:

    Somebody actually asked this over at the Buzzer blog too, and here’s the answer I got from my contact at Canada Line:

    “The question about the train colour scheme is an interesting one. As far as I know, it was never intended to be red. The blue, green and white colour scheme is intended to reflect the westcoast environment of mountains, sea and (sometimes) blue sky.”

    I guess Canada doesn’t automatically have to equal red?

    Wow that’s pretty cool! I can’t wait to try out the Canada Line. We’ll be using it when we head to YVR for our trip to Costa Rica in December. Though other than that, I dont see myself using it.

    Pretty cool to see it before people make it all dirty!

    Thanks for the vid, Rebecca. It’s great to see that our little (haha) RAV project is finally close to completion. It’ll be great for getting to and from the airport for sure.

    How well is the “split” executed at Bridgeport station? Coming from Vancouver, do you switch trains to continue into Richmond or do you switch to go to the airport? I couldn’t really hear the announcement at the end of the video.

    @Michael The trains will be marked as Richmond-Bridgeport or YVR (like VCC-Clark or Waterfront with the existing lines). Bridgeport will be the switching point. If you’re headed South you can either stay on the train (or hop off and wait for another in the same direction) to head to the Airport or Richmond.

    Thanks Rebecca for the excellent updates everyday! I can’t wait to move there. So happy for you guys! I have lived in NYC for two years taking the mass transit and the tunnels just reminds me of it. I would love to get rid of my car and hop back on the train again.

    @Jhenifer, I think what @CL is referring to is the colours on the maps. I have no problem with the colours of the trains. On the maps, though, we already have a blue line (and light blue dots for SeaBus). Choosing light blue to represent Canada Line when there are so many other options available, including red (which for most people I think seems the obvious choice) seems unnecessarily confusing.

    Ok…I would be a supporter of the Canada Line… up until what I heard today.
    They are charging an additional $2.50 per trip on top of your regular fare for an “airport” trip… That’s right… Regardless of whether you have a 1, 2 or 3 zone pass…you’re still gonna get hosed the extra $2.50 if you are going to the airport. That’s total garbage! They are also abolishing the 98 B-Line and 424 busses!!

    @ Angry – there will be a premium fare but not at first. However, it will still cost less overall (and take far less time) than driving, taking a cab, or perhaps even a shuttle. I don’t mind paying for that.

    Personally, I like the light blue for the Canada Line. But I agree, the premium fare for YVR is a terrible idea. Toll the bridges, not the transit users!
