Recipients of the 41st YWCA Women of Distinction Awards were announced this evening at the Westin Bayshore in Downtown Vancouver. Over a thousand guests gathered to celebrate the 106 nominees and 12 recipients of the awards, presented by Scotiabank.
YWCA Women of Distinction Awards Recipients 2024
“For me the awards are most importantly about visibility. It’s about seeing women in positions of power, of influence, as change-makers, and as visionaries” – YWCA CEO Erin Seeley
Outstanding Workplace: Vancouver Community College
Connecting the Community Award:Raheil Moradi (Gender Equity)
Each nominee chose a YWCA area that is important to them for a chance to donate $10,000, courtesy of Scotiabank, to the YWCA program of her choice. The public voted on this award, for which all nominees were eligible.
The fundraising goal of the evening was $250,000 to support the YWCA Slocan development, which will provide deeply affordable and below-market housing with 70 new homes to help individuals and families thrive. An update on that total plus official photos from the evening will be available a bit later on the YWCA’s Facebook page.
Nominations for the 2025 awards are now open! Deadline to nominate is November 29, 2024. These awards honour all women, including trans women. The YWCA strongly encourages nominations that recognize the contributions of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour, as well as 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
YWCA Metro Vancouver is dedicated to achieving women’s equality. Their mission is to touch lives and build better futures for women and their families through advocacy and integrated services that foster economic independence, wellness and equal opportunities.

Following a critically-acclaimed, sold-out performance of Book 1 in 2023, Vicky Chow returns to complete legendary composer Philip Glass’ iconic Piano Etudes Book 2 with Music on Main. You can enter to win tickets!
Music on Main Presents Vicky Chow
Date: May 28, 2024 at 7:30pm
Location: Christ Church Cathedral (690 Burrard St, Vancouver)
Praised as “one of the new stars of new music” (Los Angeles Times), Chow has scaled the highest levels of musicality and performance since making her orchestral debut at the age of 10 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and serving as Music On Main’s first-ever artist in residence in 2018.
Chow’s deep understanding of Philip Glass’ Piano Etudes is informed in part by her own connections with the composer, and their shared presence in New York City’s new music community. Chow is a long-time member of the famed Bang on a Can All-Stars, a six-member amplified ensemble recognized worldwide for their ultra-dynamic live performances and recordings of today’s most innovative music. She first met Glass while performing with him on stage, at the same piano, during one of the legendary Bang on a Can Marathons staged annually in the city.
Now centered in New York, Chow serves as faculty at the Bang on a Can Summer Institute and has been on faculty at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. She is on the Board of Advisors for Composers Now and is also a mentor at The Juilliard School.
If you’re taking the Hullo Ferry on foot to Nanaimo from Downtown Vancouver you have a new option to get around the Harbour City! Evo Car Share, created by BCAA, has launched a new Evo Return round-trip car share service at the Nanaimo Hullo ferry terminal.
Hullo Ferry to Nanaimo and Evo Car Share
Those heading to Vancouver Island can use the Evo app to reserve an Evo Return up to 30 days ahead for a guaranteed Evo at the Nanaimo Hullo terminal when they arrive. While normally you can pick up/drop off an Evo anywhere in the service area, an Evo Return requires you to start and finish your trip in the same spot. This will ensure that Hullo passengers will have access to a car right at the terminal.
Two Evo Returns are already on site and bookable, with the possibility for Evo to add more based on popularity.
For Hullo passengers looking for an active way to get around Nanaimo, a second BCAA service – Evolve E-Bike Share – is also available through the Evo app and has just launched in Nanaimo with 16 parking zones around the city. Locate an available Evolve E-Bike, unlock it by scanning the bike’s QR code, wear a helmet (available in each Evolve E-Bike basket), and start riding. Riders can pay per minute ($0.35) or hour ($12.99) or opt for a monthly subscription ($9.99/mo) for a $0.10 per minute rate. *Prices in this post are reflective of those available at time of publishing.
