This Spring Break, VIFF is hosting a family-friendly series, Studio Ghibli Forever!, featuring all 23 films from the world’s most revered animation studio. With animated works spanning four decades, VIFF invites audiences to revisit the full collection on the big screen.

Tickets: Open to all ages, VIFF offers reduced pricing of $8 tickets for Youth aged 12 and under for all films in this series.
The series will feature gems such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke, Studio Ghibli Forever! launches just in time for Spring Break, with the first installment, focused on the years 1984 to 1999, screening from March 13 to 25 at the VIFF Centre.

Screening in chronological order, beginning with Hayao Miyazaki’s first film as writer-director Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, each title will play twice—once as a matinee in an English language dub and again, the following evening, in the original Japanese with English subtitles. Select evening shows will be introduced by local animators and scholars, including Jeff Chiba Stearns, Keith Blackmore, and Ann Marie Fleming.
Continuing the story, Studio Ghibli Forever! Part Two will feature monthly screenings of Ghibli favourites including Spirited Away, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle and more, and play out through the remainder of 2023.
VIFF’s retrospective series follows news that Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki will come back from retirement with a new feature film, How Do You Live?, destined for release later this year.

Spring Break at Britannia Mine Museum: Mini Mud Monsters
Where: 150 Copper Dr, Britannia Beach
Located 45 minutes north of Vancouver on the picturesque Sea-to-Sky highway
When: Wednesdays to Sundays (March 15-19 & March 22-26) 1:30pm to 4:00pm
Live in the Lab: Mini Mud Monsters drop-in sessions inside the Terra Lab will focus on the important environmental remediation lessons of the Britannia Mine due to acid rock drainage, which occurs naturally when rainwater reacts with oxygen and exposed minerals.
Participants will meet tiny organisms from nearby Britannia Creek and learn how they help us understand the impacts of mining on local ecosystems. Located up the mountain from the Museum, Britannia Creek is a freshwater body that empties into Howe Sound/Átl’ka7tsem, Canada’s 19th UNESCO Biosphere Region. Dissolved metals from the mine due to acid rock drainage were once a significant source of pollution and Britannia Creek was heavily impacted. Skimming the creek for insect life and looking for pollution-intolerant species can help demonstrate the positive impacts of the Epcor Britannia Mine Water Treatment Plant, which has significantly improved water quality since 2005.
The Museum’s Terra Lab is an exhibit and STEAM programming space that allows for public and student engagement on the innovative exploration of sustainable mining, environmental remediation and our move towards sustainable resource extraction.
100 Years of the Mill
The Museum is also celebrating 100 Years of the Mill this year, paying homage to the iconic 20-storey Mill No. 3 building, a National Historic Site which was built in 1923. Throughout this year, the Museum will celebrate the Mill’s history through an exhibition and events which highlight the technology and engineering developed within it, the impacts it made to the mine’s operations and the memories it has for people within the community. The Arts Club’s 60th Season
The 2023–2024 season will kick off in September at the Arts Club’s flagship venue, the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, with the devouring horror musical Little Shop of Horrors, a co-production with the Citadel Theatre. Four other shows are also programmed for the Stanley: Elf: The Musical, a gleeful holiday present based on the beloved film; Choir Boy, a co-production with Canadian Stage of the Tony Award–nominated coming-of-age story; Red Velvet, the true story of Ira Aldridge, the first Black actor to play Othello in London; and the romantic musical comedy Guys & Dolls, a cool summer treat to beat the heat.
