It’s been years since I attended any Dine Out Vancouver events, so when Rebecca asked me to check a few out this year, I gladly took it as an opportunity to dine one of Vancouver’s finest restaurants: Market by Jean-Georges at the Shangri-La Hotel.
In addition to offering their usual $38 prix fixe menu, this year they introduced, “Film Feast: Jiro Dreams of Sushi.” The event, which completely sold out on all the nights it was offered, included an exclusive screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi (which follows the now 88-year-old sushi master chef and owner of Sukiyabashi Jiro, the first sushi restaurant ever to be awarded three Michelin stars), followed by a special 4-course dinner inspired by the film.
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the event, but I was lucky enough to taste the restaurant’s $38 prix fixe menu, which was delightful. In the past, I found some of the Dine Out dinners a little disappointing — maybe it’s because the restaurants cook a selected few items en masse and perhaps there is a loss in quality in such a process. However, my dinner at Market — prepared by Chef Montgomery Lau — was top notch.
My Dine Out Meal for $38: Seared Gulf Shrimp, Butternut Squash, Ginger and Basil; Slowly Cooked Steelhead, Brussels Sprouts, Truffle Potatoes; Buttermilk Panna Cotta, Cassis Poached Pear, Pear Sorbet
Though I found my first course, seared gulf shrimp with butternut squash, slightly overcooked, the steelhead was probably the most perfectly cooked piece of fish I’ve ever had, and the truffled mashed potatoes it sat upon added great depth of flavour.
For dessert, the buttermilk panna cotta was both light and creamy and the cassis poached pear with pear sorbet added just the right amount of sweetness to the end of my first Dine Out dinner in a long time, convincing me that I should definitely attend more events next year.

Last night the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver hosted a preview event for their new pop-up restaurant on the 15th floor of their iconic downtown accommodation, announcing that The Roof will be open this month.
Under the copper green roof of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, The Roof will be open from February, 2014 through to the fall and it will be the hotel’s main venue for breakfast, lunch, and dinner service. Decades ago the space was a staple of the Vancouver dining and after work cocktail scene, serving up prime rib — and unique city views — that long time locals still talk about to this day.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Afternoon Tea
Samples were streaming out of the kitchen at the preview event as guests enjoyed “The Roof Negroni” cocktails and Moscow Mules served in copper cups.
Chef Cameron will create classic, simple, and fresh menu items along with prime cuts of Certified Angus Beef, Sakura Farms Pork and Innisfail Lamb. Fish lovers can choose from the freshest BC Wild Salmon, Haida Gwaii Halibut and Ahi Tuna accompanied by comfortable and creative side dishes.
Dawn Chubai performing at the preview event. Live music will be featured at The Roof.
Once open for service, The Roof will have a breakfast buffet Monday to Friday along with breakfast a-la-carte, lunch, and dinner. Keeping with Fairmont tradition, Afternoon Tea will also be served daily. The bar will have a “bar bites” menu and daily beverage service.
Follow the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates about The Roof and make your reservations by emailing hvc.events[at]fairmont.com.

Say Anything…
(Cameron Crowe, 1989)
John Cusack’s iconic performance as the boombox-toting kickboxer Lloyd Dobler, who falls in love with “a brain trapped in the body of a game show hostess” (Ione Skye) in director Cameron Crowe’s Say Anything…, is, arguably, one of the best teen films to come out of the 1980s. It also happens to be one of our most requested films and the perfect movie to kick off February’s Friday Late Night Movie series. Also starring Lili Taylor, Jeremy Piven, John Mahoney, and Peter Gabriel’s ultra-romantic love song, In Your Eyes.

Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrmann, 1996)
Baz Luhrmann’s dizzyingly kinetic and thoroughly modern re-telling of William Shakespeare’s revered tragedy about two star-crossed young lovers (Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes) is a must-see on the big screen and the perfect late night Valentine’s Day movie. The film is notable not just for its all-star cast (John Leguizamo, Paul Sorvino, Paul Rudd, Brian Dennehy, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, and many more) and its killer soundtrack (featuring songs by The Cardigans, Radiohead and Garbage) but because it manages to remain loyal to The Bard’s original, beautiful text. (Although… it doesn’t end well.)

A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick, 1971)
Stanley Kubrick’s ultra-violent, ultra-sarcastic, and ultra-visionary film set in a futuristic Britain follows the misadventures of charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell), who volunteers for an experimental aversion therapy developed by the government in an effort to solve society’s crime problems while he is in prison… but not all goes according to plan. Featuring lots of Beethoven and a truly terrifying take on ocular surgery.

Donnie Darko (Richard Kelly, 2001)
Jake Gyllenhaal’s career took off after his turn as the titular Donnie Darko, a troubled teen plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident. Donnie Darko has quietly emerged as a huge cult favorite following its initial release, and features strong supporting performances from an incredible cast including Patrick Swayze, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Maggie Gyllenhaal (playing Darko’s sister, of course), Katharine Ross, Seth Rogen, and Noah Wyle.
The Rio Theatre is an independent art and movie house located at 1660 West Broadway, at Commercial Drive, and is easily accessible by transit. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter for more film screenings, comedy showcases, and special event information.
