Cruz Azul advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup Final after defeating Mexican rivals Tigres UNAL, the previously second ranked team in Concacaf. Cruz Azul’s most recent appearance in the continental final was in 2013-14, where they secured their sixth club title by defeating Deportivo Toluca. The other five titles came in the 1969, 1970, 1971, 1996, and 1997 editions. La Máquina have won the Liga MX title nine times and recently finished third in the Clausura and will now play Club Léon in the Clausura quarterfinals.
Whitecaps FC qualified for the Concacaf Champions Cup after winning a third consecutive TELUS Canadian Championship.
