Expo 86 Photo Exhibit & Gallery Summer Fair
Gallery 881 presents Michael de Courcy: One in a Million, a major photography exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of Expo 86 on display from August 8 to September 5, 2026 with an opening reception and summer fair on August 8th.
The opening reception will extend beyond a traditional gallery event, with live limited-edition t-shirt printing and neighbourhood partners helping create a summer fair atmosphere. Community partners include Lucy’s Frozen Custard, Prototype Coffee, Mr. Tube Steak, and the Strathcona BIA, with PrintMaker Studio as lead sponsor.

The exhibition brings together over 860 photographs from de Courcy’s Expo 86 archive, installed across the gallery walls as an accessible, public-facing portrait of one of Vancouver’s most significant cultural moments.
Conceived in the spirit of a summer reunion, de Courcy’s One in a Million returns the crowds of Expo 86 to public view. Faces, gestures, families, visitors, and fleeting encounters fill the gallery, forming a collective portrait of the people who moved through the fair-like atmosphere of Expo 86.
During the exhibition, visitors will be able to purchase individual archive prints directly from the wall for $10 each. As photographs are purchased and removed, new images will periodically take their place, echoing the movement of people who entered, moved through, and exited Expo 86 itself.
