Hope in Shadows Calendar 2027

The Hope in Shadows calendar project was created by Pivot Legal Society in 2003 and gifted to Megaphone Magazine’s vendors in 2016. Each year, the project engages over 100 Downtown Eastside community members in a photo contest. Participants are provided a theme, a single-use camera and training on how to gather consent from photo subjects, and sent out into the streets for 5 days to take images of their lives. Returned cameras are developed for a jury of community members and staff to parse down to the Top 30.

This year’s theme is “Work,” exploring the many forms labour can take — including paid employment, caregiving, volunteering, creativity, advocacy and the everyday work of building and sustaining community. We’re celebrating the contributions people make every day, including the labour that often goes unseen or undervalued.

More than 100 community members participated in this year’s photography contest, contributing over 1,500 photographs. A community jury narrowed the submissions to 30 images, and readers and supporters then voted to select the final 12 photographs featured in the calendar.

When you purchase a Hope in Shadows calendar, you’re directly supporting the people who sell them. Find a vendor today.

Support Megaphone Magazine

From the Vendor Hub at 312 Main Street, Megaphone serves around 150 vendors. As frontline workers, they are normally open to the public Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:30pm. They sell products to vendors, provide non-judgmental, trauma-informed programs and crisis support, and engage with the Downtown Eastside community. They are partners, advocates, and at times, first responders on the street. Consider a donation to Megaphone, beyond your calendar or magazine purchase, to support their important community work.

Get Tickets for the Evening Fundraiser

Join a night of inspiration and hear a keynote address from Jen St. Denis, senior editor and reporter at The Tyee. This year’s theme is Journalism & Democracy, exploring the vital role journalism plays in a healthy democracy — and why it matters who gets to tell the story.
