Virago Nation’s movement is medicine and they are sharing it with everyone.

Representation was a driving force that brought members of Virago Nation together. Ten years ago, they came together to share their frustrations over the lack of diversity they were seeing in the media, let alone the burlesque stages.

“The majority of the stories I’d see in the media were about the traumatic experiences Indigenous communities faced including the ongoing MMIWG2S crisis,” Shane Sables, founding member, shares. “If it wasn’t stories about our trauma, we would otherwise be portrayed as alcoholics or the fetishization of Indigenous people. Virago Nation was a response to that, to be a counter-narrative to what we were seeing at the time.”

This mindset, and their decade together as a troupe, has not only won them multiple awards and taken them to burlesque’s largest stage, the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, but has paved the way for other Indigenous, BIPOC, and queer artists, even in smaller or more rural cities and towns across the country. Through the show, they look to retell this story on their own terms, honouring those experiences, while also entertaining and inspiring the audience to create community, and make art whether or not it fits mainstream ideals.
