Every May, during Sexual Violence Prevention Month, Surrey Women’s Centre honours survivors, naming what often remains unnamed to say “you are not alone, you deserve safety, and healing is your right.” This year, instead of just raising awareness, the Surrey Women’s Centre has announced the opening of the city’s first Sexual Assault Centre, set to open its doors in November of 2025.

The new centre will be open 24/7 and will offer immediate access to survivor-led forensic care, counselling and emotional support, assistance reporting (including anonymous reporting options), opportunities to connect and heal with other survivors, and a safe space to find compassion and be believed.

May is Sexual Violence Prevention Month

May is Sexual Violence Prevention Month. The numbers are sobering, but behind every statistic is a survivor who deserves better. In August 2022, Statistics Canada reported that sexual assault is the only violent crime in Canada that is not declining. Getting to the root of the problem is critical for solving it.

Sexual Violence Prevention Month is a crucial time to raise awareness about sexual violence and promote prevention, education, and support to survivors. Primary prevention efforts address the attitudes and oppressive systems that create a climate of inequality and violence. Throughout the month of May, Surrey Women’s Centre will be exploring what these strategies look like and how we can all do our part to support prevention.

Follow the Surrey Women’s Centre on Facebook and Instagram for more information and help raise awareness today.

Pride Month With Surrey Women’s Centre

June is Pride Month and Surrey Women’s Centre recognizes that 2SLGBTQIA+ people face unique forms of gender-based violence. Far too often, they are left out of the conversation entirely, despite facing higher rates of victimization. This June, the Surrey Women’s Centre initiatives will centre queer and gender-diverse survivors. Because safety should never depend on who you love or how you identify. To celebrate Pride Month, Surrey Women’s Centre will be at Surrey Pride on June 28, they will continue to develop resource materials for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and engage in team training to strengthen support for survivors, and much more.
