Drive Safe Today in Metro Vancouver
byI woke up with sun beaming through the bedroom curtains. The voice at the local radio station coming through my alarm clock said it was “frigid” outside but the warmth radiating from my window was quite comforting. As I was getting ready to head out this morning my mother called and said it’s a “white out” in Surrey. She couldn’t even see her neighbour’s house and my brother in law who was on the highway called to tell her to stay in today, and not go driving anywhere. As this was in complete contrast with everything I was viewing out my balcony I looked up a few local webcams to get the scoop (all still shots are from around 10:00am today)
The Katkam in Vancouver (what I am seeing)
Meanwhile…
Boundary Road & The Queensborough in New Westminster
and going the other way on the Port Mann
It might not be too long before that front rolls over this way but in the meantime if you’re heading out today, check the local highway cams and traffic reports to make sure you’re not going to get stuck anywhere unprepared.

I was afraid this was going to happen…my mom called me this morning with the same “white out” report from Langley. I still haven’t decided if I’m going to risk going out there today or not.
That much snow just a little bit east? Yikes!
Yuck. Things are still looking good on ye olde KatKam. Quite a bit like where I am, actually:

Though I suspect that it’s about 20 degrees warmer here. And more humid.
I was reporting for 1130 this morning… and instead of doing much reporting, anytime I was in the newsroom, I was answering traffic calls.
It’s still crazy out there.
That kind of weather localization over relatively small distances is … scary.
That’s Vancouver. We’re at a bit of altitude here near Metrotown, on the north side of the hill. This morning it snowed and snowed and snowed and snowed. We’ve shoveled the drive twice. If we ever hear “rain, or snow in the Fraser Valley and at higher elevations,” we’re part of the “higher elevations.”
The biggest contrast I ever saw was New Year’s Eve 2005/06 (iirc): downtown there was rain and not a speck of snow anywhere. Driving home, when I reached Terminal Avenue there was some snow on the ground. By the time I got home to Burnaby it was like a ski resort, with at least 15 cm of snow on everything.
We bought snow tires this year, and have already got our money’s worth. It’s shocking how many Vancouverites expect to get around on slick summer tires in the slush and ice, however. I’m trundling along in our Toyota Echo, and people in their Volvos and BMWs are sliding all over the place.
