Perfect Imperfections: The Art of a Messy Life

Comments 7 by Rebecca Bollwitt

JUNO-nominated jazz bassist Jodi Proznick, award-winning educator and performer Celeste Snowber, and emerging harpist Alexa Reimer come together in the world premiere of Perfect Imperfections: The Art of a Messy Life at Vancity Culture Lab at The Cultch. Interweaving comedy, dance, and live music, the work offers a poignant reflection of the many ironies faced by all women today.

Perfect Imperfections: The Art of a Messy Life

Where: Vancity Culture Lab, The Cultch (1895 Venables St, Vancouver)
When: June 14–16, 2018 at 8:00pm
Tickets: $20, available now online.

Directed by Lynn Fels, this multi-generational trio will be joined by guest artist singer-songwriter Katherine Penfold.

Perfect Imperfections will delight and move in a hilarious and heartrending combination of lived experiences and narratives. The provocative show addresses sensuality, loss, the spirituality of worry, wonder — and incorporates a range of formats from TED Talk parodies to haikus, and all-out improvisation.

The playful energy of the program can be gleaned from set list titles, such as “Not enough – Too much!” “Funeral for Superwoman,” and “Spirituality of Worry.” The aptly named “The Roll” waxes poetic on the well-known source of many people’s deepest insecurities, while recognizing that the belly holds women’s deepest eros.

Proznick and Reimer will improvise original music on upright bass and harp, respectively, as Penfold sings from Proznick’s applauded album Sun Songs, which was included in the Top 10 jazz albums of 2017 (Ottawa Citizen). Throughout the performance, Snowber’s dance, comedy, and spoken word will create an intimate space where both humour and humanity collide.

The interdisciplinary work has relevancy to the #MeToo movement and recent proliferation of stories about the objectification of women. The artists seek to reclaim and inhabit the body by honouring its paradoxical beauty of imperfections. In a pivotal moment in the performance, they confront the lurking, destructive feeling of “not enough-ness” that plagues the ambitious, the unrecognized, and the overwhelmed.

Austeville Properties presents Art on 6th, a new rental building featuring 97 suites in the heart of South Granville. Through neighbourhood partnerships with local businesses, they’re helping residents get to know the neighbours in this exciting community. I took a stroll through South Granville to visit some of these partners.

Explore South Granville with Art on 6th

I started out by the Art on 6th site, across from 6th and Fir Park and couldn’t decide whether I wanted to shop first, or get a snack.

With the sun shining I walked to the very top of my route at EQ3 on Granville and worked my way back to my home base, making sure to stroll under the Stanley Theatre’s marquee to see what was currently on stage.

At EQ3 I scoped out a selection of bed frames and sectional couches, playing with configurations in my head like it was a game of mental Tetris. They have a beautiful assortment of outdoor furniture available now for the summer season, from vases to chaises.

Looping back down Granville, Orling & Wu was next, which is just a few doors down from Cadence Cycling Studio.

I browsed throw rugs, plush pillows and bath soaps, and stopped at the notebooks, pens, and journals. I’m a sucker for a great pieces of stationery. I wandered down to RYU on West 4th, where tanks, hoodies, tees, and shells make up the perfect uniform for running the False Creek Seawall.

Now it was time to eat! Novo Pizzeria & Wine Bar for authentic Neapolitan-style, wood-fired pizza for lunch followed by a coffee at Elysian on Burrard and 5th.

Finally, I had to treat myself (and bring something home for John after my day of neighbourhood explorations) so the pièce de résistance was found at Beaucoup Bakery.

The Spirit of Ogopogo in the Okanagan

Would you believe me if I told you I spent the whole day in the Okanagan with Ogopogo? Thanks to Jordan Coble from the Sncewips Heritage Museum in West Kelowna, I now know two things: Ogopogo is much more than a cartoon rendering, and Ogopogo (n’ha-a-itk) is all around the Okanagan.

The Spirit of Ogopogo in the Okanagan

Ogopogo, "The Lake Monster", Okanagan Lake BC

“In our language it’s n’ha-a-itk, the spirit of the lake. To me, when you talk about n’ha-a-itk it’s the spirit of the water. It’s everything in our life, everything revolves around it,” Jordan explained to me while I was on an expedition with ZenSeekers. We had just hiked up the Boucherie Rush Trail on Mount Boucherie to get a panoramic view of the land and lake.

“It’s not just the water, it’s the water bugs, the fish, the plants, everything that it flows in and out of, and that’s what n’ha-a-itk to me is. So, when people come and ask, ‘where can we find Ogopogo?’ I say well you’re looking at it. Everything you see here is Ogopogo.” Continue reading this post ⟩⟩
