The smell of mini donuts permeates the air as I step out of the heritage carousel pavilion at Burnaby Village Museum. I usually enter the back way, through the gift shop, and past the Elworth house toward the Interurban Tram Barn. Suddenly I’m in old timey Burnaby, passing carollers on Hill Street and catching a show at the bandstand next to the Concord Social sleigh.

There’s a hum of activity inside the Ice Cream Parlour, at supper time on a weekend, and Burnaby Lake General Store is hopping. Evergreen boughs line the street, and lights twinkle in the trees.
It’s craft time in the old real estate office and when John and I loop down Brookfield lane, past Bell’s Dry Goods, we hear the bubble of a rain-fuelled Deer Lake Brook. We cross the bridge and enjoy a musical performance at the Orientation Plaza, before taking in more light displays in the orchard.
Crossing back over the bridge, we spot some HBC stripes on some bears behind Tom Irvine’s house then we duck into the Interurban Tram Barn for an interpretive history talk.
Heritage Christmas at Burnaby Village Museum is not only a fun and festive light display, it’s a stroll down memory lane and a lively lesson in local history.

The Firehall Arts Centre is excited to remount the award-winning Circle Game: Reimagining the Music of Joni Mitchell from Saturday, January 12 to Saturday, February 9, 2019.
Circle Game: Reimagining the Music of Joni Mitchell
When: January 12 to February 9, 2019
Where: Firehall Arts Centre (280 E. Cordova, Vancouver)
Tickets: From $25 online or call (604) 689-0926
The enduring music of Canadian icon and renowned singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell is reimagined in this energetic musical experience. Conceived and directed by two of Vancouver’s own theatrical powerhouses, Andrew Cohen and Anna Kuman, Circle Game features six quadruple-threat talents including Benjamin Millman, Scott Perrie, Adriana Ravalli, Kimmy Choi, Samantha Bourque and David Z. Cohen. Together, they play eighteen instruments, creating modern variations on themes by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.
One of the most influential female recording artists of the late 20th century, Joni Mitchell has often reflected on social and environmental ideals through her music. Millennial culture celebrates the repurposed and the upcycled. Mitchell’s music stands the test of time and once again she is the voice of a generation. The heartbreak of a failed love affair in “River”, the fear of imminent ecological disaster in “Big Yellow Taxi”, and the promise of a generation gathering to ‘get back to the garden’ in “Woodstock” are topics that resound as heavily today as they did fifty years ago.
