Total Eclipse of the Moon, A Vancouver View

Comments 2 by Rebecca Bollwitt

I’ve always loved looking up at the stars, especially when you get the chance to peer into a night’s sky when you’re out of the city. When I went to Courtenay with Keira a few weekends ago I sat in the back seat of the car from the ferry to her mom’s house just looking out the window and gazing up at the millions of twinkles I never see anymore from town.

Luckily for us city folk something will be happening tonight’s sky that we’ll all be able to enjoy – light pollution or not. From around 7:00pm until about 7:51pm PT folks all over North America will be able to walk outside of their houses, apartments and offices, look up, and witness a total eclipse of the moon.

The space agency is predicting that “the moon will probably take on a vivid red or orange colour during the total phase” because there have not been any recent gas and dust emissions which block the sunlight and cause “dark” eclipses. [CBC]

It seems as though there are a lot of people who are really looking forward to this cosmic shadowing, heck there’s even a Facebook event setup for watchers. Instructions are to look 1 hour 20 minutes before and after to see the partial phases.

If you’ve scoped out an eclipse-watching site, feel free to share below (unless it’s top secret), and if you’ve got Flickr pics as it happens, drop a link in the comments – and let’s all hope it doesn’t rain.

Update: The first photo to come through on Flickr tonight, shot by Chris in who is in eastern British Columbia.

Update: Here’s another photo form Derek Miller [Flickr][Blog], who is in the Metro Vancouver area.

Bowl for Big Brothers Classic – Update

Now that our team is complete for the Bowl for Big Brothers Classic, I’d like to introduce our members, their blogs, and provide an update.

Corinna wrote a post about how the Big Brothers organization has touched her family’s life, and Tod Maffin wrote last night that we’ve already reached 50% of our goal – that’s not even including some of the offline donations. Tod was also kind enough to create a lovely banner for our team (above).

Mission: To enhance the resiliency and well-being of children by involving them in high quality prevention-focused mentoring programs and by actively seeking to positively influence policies and programs that affect children’s social and emotional development.
Vision: To put a mentor in the life of every child who needs one.
Commitment to Diversity: Big Brothers embodies the principles of diversity and welcomes participants regardless of race, religion, culture or sexual orientation. [Big Brothers Vancouver]

We’ll all be taking to the lanes of Xcalibur in Surrey on Sunday March 16th alongside other company teams. The entire event lasts over 6 weeks with over 400 teams bowling for the cause.

Young Women in Business: Beyond Pink

Comments 5 by Rebecca Bollwitt

If tonight’s Third Tuesday, tomorrow’s CaseCamp or this weekend’s Northern Voice are not your cup of tea, perhaps you’re a young woman in business (or looking to get into the professional world) who just might be interested in another type of conference in Vancouver.

Beyond Pink is the first conference of its kind in Western Canada, and will act as the launch event for the Young Women in Business network (YWiB) in March 2008. The event will feature an interactive workshop series, speaker and panel sessions hosted by individuals with extraordinary backgrounds and experiences, the Connect! Women in Business Tradeshow, a break out luncheon with cross-industry mentors, and a celebratory Gala dinner to wrap up the weekend. [Beyond Pink]

This is the first event YWiB has hosted and was created by two women who are in their final year at UBC, a mix of current student at SFU, Emily Carr, and UBC, recent alumni and other young professionals around the city.

What: Beyond Pink will appeal to ambitious, positive, and forward-thinking young women from all backgrounds and industries. We developed the Young Women in Business network with the notion that we are all in the business of managing our careers and that we require many of the same skills and tools in order to reach our personal and professional potential.

Where: Sheraton Wall Centre, downtown Vancouver, BC
Where: Friday, March 28 & Saturday, March 29, 2008
More Info: The theme on Friday will be “Inside Out”, and on Saturday “Outside In”, visit Beyond Pink for an itinerary.

Registration closes this coming Monday, February 25th, or you could also sign up for the tradeshow portion as there is still some room left.

Update: Final day to register is now MARCH 13TH at 11:59PM

The New JohnBollwitt.com

My husband has a great blog that he’s maintained since the fall of 2004. For his last birthday I took a bold step and registered his name as a domain. Until now he’s been Audihertz (for blogging, Flickr, Twitter etc.) but I thought he might appreciate the straightforward url, and he did.

JohnBollwitt.com

He’s still getting things moved over to a new host, waiting for propagation and we’re working out some kinks that were made in some of our other sites BUT, I’m pleased to announce that JohnBollwitt.com is now live. It will still redirect from the old domain for some time (including archive posts), but it would be advisable to update your blogroll if you have him on there, or it would be the perfect time to add him as well.
