#WhatsTheLink: TransLink Helps Make 107,000 Bike Trips Happen
Each Day in Metro Vancouver
Bike to Work Week is time to celebrate and participate in healthy commuting to work and school by bike. And this year TransLink is helping people make that healthy cycling choice by making it easier to jump on two wheels five or more days a week.
This week we’ve added the first TransLink secure bike parking area in Metro Vancouver! To celebrate the occasion and all the riders who are joining the legions on cyclists in the region on bike, we’re giving away two very special prizes!
#WhatsTheLink and the new Secure Bike Parking
Cycling is part of TransLink’s mandate as the transportation agency of Metro Vancouver. TransLink is responsible for providing cycling options in the region and connecting cycling to the wider transportation system of Metro Vancouver. This includes public transit, the major roads network and five bridges in Metro Vancouver.
TransLink is unique in North America as a transportation authority that links so many ways of moving people and goods. Part of TransLink’s multimodal mandate is to help support the people making the 107,000 bike trips each day in Metro Vancouver.
What are those TransLink cycling options?
The BC Parkway
A 26-kilometre, multi-use path that roughly parallels the Expo SkyTrain Line, connecting Surrey City Centre, New Westminster, South Burnaby and Vancouver.
The Central Valley Greenway
A 24-kilometre route for cycling, jogging, walking, wheelchairs, skateboarding and blading that connect Vancouver with Burnaby and New Westminster
Regional Cycling Strategy
A common framework for action by TransLink, municipalities and other partners
Canada Line Pedestrian-Bicycling Bridge
The important link connecting the cycling routes of Richmond and Vancouver
And now a brand new Secure Bike Parking area!
Part of the upgrades for Main Street-Science World Station, the Secure Bicycle Parking area has room for 86 bikes, more than four times the amount of bike storage that was there before!
Parking in the area costs $1 a day up to $8 a month. After parking for eight days in a single calendar month, registered customers will not be charged again until the following month. To register, go to www.translink.ca/bikeparking.
This is the first of future Secure Bike Parking areas for the transit system in Metro Vancouver. This investment moves the region closer to one of the Metro Vancouver region’s long-term goals for half of all trips to be made by walking, cycling or transit by 2014. Increasing cycling trips depends on investment in infrastructure and programs like Secure Bike Parking areas.

I currently bike from Burnaby to downtown Vancouver and regularly frequent the dunsmuir and hornby bike lanes.
They really are refreshing to ride in after dealing with regular traffic during the rest of my trip.
I do occasionally hitch a ride on the sky train with my bike back home if its raining like crazy. Having that option available after 6pm works really well.
Cheers to more bike options as my primary commute is by bike!
I use translinks public transit on work days and bike on my days off! I love how we can take our bikes on the sky train if need be! Very convenient
I use transit ever single weekday for the past 15 years
I take transit to and from work 5 days a week
I use my bike to commute to work. I’ve only used the transit bike racks a few times. They are very easy to use but you can’t always count on there being room and waiting another 15 minutes for the next bus isn’t always an option.
I love biking to work! It’s also super easy to put my bike on the bus, when necessary.
I’d use Translink public transit
I use public transit almost ever day
I bike to work
I use Translink to get to work, and also love biking wherever I can – especially if there are bike lanes that I can use!
I ride my bike everywhere from May-Sept! I use a lot of the bike paths including the central park greenway and love it 🙂
I use public transit frequently. It’s especially great for downtown, or going to concerts and hockey games.
I use transit every day.
Weather permitting, I use my bike to commute to/from work and also cycle along the various bike lanes in and around the city. Love the Canada Line and use it whenever convenient for me to get to downtown Vancouver.
I’m supporting bike to work week this week! Yesterday I rode to work for the first time-logging 17km each way from vancouver to richmond. It was no doubt hard work but I really enjoyed it. Now I’m exploring all the fantastic bike routes and figuring out my best way to bike regularly! I’m really inspired and will definitely find time and energy to continue!
I use my bike to beat the downtown rush and zip around False Creek to the office in the morning after taking my bike aboard the Canada line from Olympic Village Station.
skytrain almost every day
I use my bike to transport myself all over downtown Vancouver. Whether I’m going to the library or going Geocaching in Stanley Park. If I’m going a further distance, Translink is my way of transportation. I often use the skytrain as well as some of the buses out in the valley.
I commute to work everyday – it’s a 1hour commute. It’s too far for me to bike as I have a bad knee. Thank goodness my transfers are very close together so I usually can go without an umbrella on rainy days.
I take transit 5 days week. I bike for recreation on the weekends with my kids.
I’ve been taking transit to work for the past 8 years. I currently ride a bike for recreation and planning to ride to work this summer. Having racks on the buses gives me the option of taking the bus one way to deal with bad weather, fatigue or mechanical breakdown.
On long trips I will put my bike on the bus.
I bike to work in the summer time and love it!
Awesome! I would leave my car at home for the month of July with the months pass! & I would definitely make use of all the bike goodies 🙂 what a great prize!!
I bike in my neighbourhood, and used to bike to work. Technically, cycling is illegal on the street of my work so bike to work week isn’t an option until we get bike lanes…
I take transit a lot. It’s frustrating when the time it takes to walk to a stop, wait for a bus, get to my stop, and catch another bus/walk to destination takes twice as long as biking would :l
I bike for leisure and around my neighbourhood. I have yet to try the TransLink cycling options!
I bike for fun.
I use translink every working day
This is a prize that would make going to summer school easier!
I would have some serious fun with my friends with these prizes – and a bus pass would be awesome!
I bike for health reasons. Will be trying to central park greenway this friday for the first time! I use the Canada Line cycling bridge everytime I want to keep my rides flat in Richmond! Good contest.
I ride my bike to work taking advantage of bike routes and lanes.
I take the public transport
My family often cycles along the seawall to Science World and use skytrain to complete our round trip home. It’s a very good exercise and riding on skytrain is a fun trip for my 2 kids.
Public transportation every day for me.
I bike from time to time, but I use public transport usually.
i bike everywhere, sometimes even to work. it’s fun and saves gas. i used the translink bike lanes to get around too like the central park greenway and the skytrain bridge to richmond.
I don’t bike often but definitely want to start doing it more.
We are a one car family, so my husband often takes transit and I am working on biking more

I use the Skytrain to get from Surrey to downtown Vancouver
I used transit to go teach in Kerrisdale twice a week. I also ride my bike downtown and on the sea wall and love the separated bike lanes!
I take the seabus to work each day, which is the best commute ever!! At work, I do alot of site visits, and my workplace has recently purchased electric bikes for the employees to use instead of cars. We have a great bike facility system in North Vancouver which makes each day a great day to ride!!
I bike to work in Richmond over the Knight St bridge.
I take the Canada line from Richmond to Downtown Vancouver.
The Canada Line is the only way to make heading downtown bearable! I bike locally along the dyke.
Transit + bike = happy community
I cycle from kits to the main street skytrain station daily, and look forward to using the new bike locks there!
I take skytrain from Surrey to downtown at least once a week
Cycling + Beta Endorphins + Healthy Mind + Healthy Body + Healthy Friends: ( when we encourage them to join) us. I am an avid cyclist and do the B.C. Parkway to New West from 7th and Heather…and various other routes. I always ask non-confident biker
friends to join me and ride at their speed. I have a friend 83 who cannot walk a block, but still can ride his bike 20 km and does. Cycling is more doeable than walking when your body starts to go! 🙂 And best of all, “Cycling is Sexy” YOU ARE THE ENGINE.
Happy end of bike to work week and don’t forget to stretch.
I transit to work and school and bike in the summer around the seawall.
I take public transit all the time to get everywhere I need to go!
I use transit every day, twice a day. It’s a great system.
The only way my son commutes …this would be a great help for him.

I use my bike every single day at work. that’s the way I work. its great, even in the Vancouver rain
I use public transit every day to go to the gym. Now that the weather is nice I am cycling again.
I take out my bike to the park in my free time.
My husband and I are new to the biking community! We have only started getting into it and love it! Have only used it for leisure and exercise as biking is not an option to commute to work for us.
I ride my bike along the Barnet Highway which is a great cycling route into the city.
I bike whenever I can!
I use translink when we are visiting Vancouver to get from the ferries downtown and around the town as well
We use translink for work and heading to downtown when parking is hard to find.
I use my bike to ride the Central Valley Greenway! And I take transit everyday to and from work.
I bike whenever I could and take transit to work.
I use my bicycle every day for my daily needs. From groceries, going to the dentist to enjoy a beautiful sunset. A transit user all my life and it’s getting better.
I bike for fun
I use skytrain a lot to go downtown for meetings, concerts and events.
I mostly take the transit to school
I run all my errands in the downtown / west end areas on my bike
I use public transit every day to go to my jobs in Richmond.
I bike to VCC station and use the lockers, then board the Skytrain to Burnaby (and love it, except the work part)
