Surrey Canada Day 2012: Concert Photos

Surrey’s Canada Day saw over 100,000 people enjoy free festivities and concerts throughout the day on July 1st as the city once again delivered a solid celebration. Neighbours, families, Canadians, and visitors enjoyed a full 12 hours of flashy midway attractions, BBQ treats, and one of our favourites — free concerts from top local and national acts.

The Chevron Main Stage ran all day with everything from Cole Armour’s national anthem performance to DJ Flipout’s mixes. The High Bar Gang, Andrew Allen, Blaze of Glory (Bon Jovi Tribute), and Jerry Doucette were all crowd favourites.

We were blown away by Jordan Cook’s wizardry on the guitar and the sweet, natural talent of Hannah Georgas.

Throughout the day the Peak Stage drew crowds to the North end of the fairgrounds despite the extra muddy conditions in this sunken corner. Every one of the Top 20 Peak Performance Project artists had a 20-minute set including Dear Rouge (who I recently profiled) and The Gay Nineties (who John was particularly impressed with).

After another rendition of O! Canada from Mark Donnelly in the late evening, tens of thousands of revellers sang along with the Sam Roberts Band as the sun began to set.

Sam Roberts, who played Canada Day in Ottawa last year, captivated the audience who sang along and danced in the open air. After a solid encore set, fireworks lit up the sky and Cloverdale sparkled.

Once again we had a fantastic time at Surrey Canada Day and I was proud to be a sponsor. A big ‘thank you’ to Mayor Watts, City Council, Coast Capital and the other sponsors who help make this event happen each year — and who keep it free for everyone.

I would also like to thank John Bollwitt for taking amazing photos, as usual. You can view his full set from Canada Day on Flickr.
