Top Story: Check Your Meat, The Listeria Scare
byJohn and I are huge fans of dinners that consist of sliced meats, cheeses, and gourmet multigrain and rosemary-infused crackers. When we first heard of the tainted meat/listeriosis outbreak (and subsequent recalls) we were slightly concerned.
Officially there are 21 confirmed cases [of listeriosis] across Canada, three in BC. Four deaths including one on Vancouver Island have been linked to the bacterium. [News1130]
We’ve had the chance to look over the official list of items that have been recalled and I believe we’re in the clear.
Federal Health Minister Tony Clement says the number of cases is stable, but it can take up to 90 days for the flu-like symptoms to appear… … check you packages of meat for the establishment code 97B stamped near the “best before” or “packed on” date.
You can find the list here and it includes more than just Maple Leaf brand items such as, the Tim Horton’s roast beef sandwich, McDonald’s sliced turkey, Safeway brand salami, and Western Family sliced cooked ham.
August 26th Update: Last night we were watching the Food Network and saw an announcement from Maple Leaf Foods. They now have this message from their CEO up on YouTube.

That is quite the list. I think I’d avoid the Bung Bologna even if it wasn’t on the list. Bung Bologna? YUCK.
thank god for vegetarianism 😉
Oh, to long for the days past of finding a Metzgerei on Robsonstrasse …
Actually, a question is are there any independent butchers/carniceros/Metzgerei remaining in the West End?
funny thing this morning – i was at tim hortons – and they have signs at the front saying that NONE of their sandwhiches are affected by this?! makes me worry that i am reading something different on the official list!
SMH cafeteria – is not making sandwhiches right now – there is a sign up that because of the recall – there will not be any fresh sandwhiches being made. – that was kinda of soothing – but sucks cause its the only thing edible at the cafeteria!
Thanks for mentioning this, Rebecca. This is just another symptom of the industrialization of agriculture and our food. For an alternative supply of great salamis and cured meats that is reliable check out Moccia-http://www.moccia.ca/ They buy their meat from Fraser Valley farmers they know and trust.
Indeed. Having some kind of stomach bug (as I did last week) in the middle of a meat recall is a little worrisome. I don’t think any of the meat I’ve bought is on the list, but who knows about the pizza we ordered…
No one will tell you if you call the store if they have any or not what is that about
I just ate at Subway yesterday! Yay me! We’ll see how I fair, they were saying that the most I might see if I am infected with it would be the porcelain throne for a little bit.
In looking at this from a PR standpoint, I wonder how this situation would have gone down before our current age of blogs, Youtube, Twitter, and any number of other alternative channels for news stories and reporting. Without calling any one person’s integrity into question, I think the temptation to avoid blame isn’t as big a temptation as it used to be. I like to think that companies are more likely to own up to responsibilities to a greater degree because of the immediacy of social media.

That’s a really unhealthy dinner. Might be a hindrance to your fitness regiment. Something to think about.
@ fotoeins – Actually yes, there’s a Euro Deli just off Robson, on Bidwell.
@ Candice – Just a few months ago a lot of places around here stopped serving sliced tomato because of that scare in the US.
@ “Me” (aka Anonymous) – Thank you for your concern. However, we do that maybe once a week and so far my fitness regime is moving along swimmingly, I’m seeing great results since we’re being so active. The photo in this post is from a dinner party we held for six people – those certainly aren’t our regular portions.
I think this whole is a behind the scenes created poitical action.
Who are these people that died ? I think the fact that the death toll was enlarged to include anyone who might have been “exposed” … is very suspicious . The media is well known to create these scares for “political reasons” …..Just like the phoney “global warming” fearmongering nonsense.
