Vancouver Whitecaps Clinch 2025 MLS Cup Playoff Spot

by Rebecca Bollwitt

The Vancouver Whitecaps made some history tonight, not only have they qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs in three consecutive seasons, this was also their earliest they have clinched a spot and they did it with the largest win in the club’s MLS-era history. This was all in front of the team’s third consecutive sellout crowd of over 26,000 fans at BC Place.

Vancouver Whitecaps Clinch Playoff Spot

The Whitecaps have six regular season matches remaining and are just one point shy of matching their all-time best in MLS of 53 points, set in 2015.

With tonight’s goals: Thomas Müller with a hat trick (two penalties and one in open play); Emmanuel Sabbi with a brace; and Mathias Laborda. 17 year old Whitecaps FC BMO Academy and Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) forward Rayan Elloumi, who was signed to an MLS contract as a Homegrown player through 2028 just yesterday, scored as well.

Thomas Müller became the first player in MLS history to score a hat-trick on his birthday, adding an assist. Müller now has four goals and one assist in his first three appearances

Yohei Takaoka recorded his MLS-leading 12th clean sheet of the season, one away from the club record of 13 set by David Ousted in 2015.

The Caps are one win away from tying their best-ever MLS regular season win total from 2015 (16 wins), and are now one home win away from equalling their best-ever MLS regular season home win total from 2021 & 2022 (10 wins). They are also one goal away from tying their most goals scored in an MLS season with 55 from 2023, and now lead MLS with a +23 goal difference.
