byVancouver Poetry House presents the 15th annual Verses Festival of Words, and this year’s theme is Amplify. The festival will focus on uplifting artists with a long history of community building and raising awareness of social issues, such as featured poet of honour Beau Sia, Order of Canada Poet Sheri-D Wilson, and more.

This year’s program includes collaborative showcases, workshops, and the annual flagship event Canadian Individual Poetry Slam (CIPS), alongside closed programs for youth and festival artists.

This year’s edition will be headlined by the world-renowned poet Beau Sia, who will perform a feature set after the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam finals on April 19. The son of Chinese immigrants from the Philippines, Sia was raised in Oklahoma City and moved to New York to attend the Tisch School of the Arts — his work has often challenged Asian American stereotypes. He was featured in the influential documentary SlamNation (1998), was an original cast member of the Tony Award-winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, and was featured in all six seasons of HBO’s acclaimed spoken word series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry. The two-time National Poetry Slam champion and the author of Well Played (2020) is currently based in LA.
“The world feels like it’s on fire — there is so much noise that fills the airwaves with lies and misinformation — and spoken word is a salve, as a practice of truth to power,” says Johnny Trinh, artistic director of Vancouver Poetry House. “Verses Festival of Words provides an opportunity to hold communion with our communities and do what our practice does best: amplify the voices that most need to be heard. This year’s program is all about creating space for folks to gather and listen.”
