Bellingham Whatcom County Getaway

Comments 246 by Rebecca Bollwitt

School is back in session but the summer sun continues to shine on the Pacific Northwest. With a strong Canadian dollar and plenty of places to spend it across the border, more and more locals are checking out our neighbours to the south in Whatcom County.

Hotel Bellwether, Bellingham, WA

Whatcom County consists of Point Roberts, Bellingham, Blaine, Chuckanut Drive, Lummi Island, Birch Bay and more. There’s much more to it than Target and Trader Joe’s. You can go on a wine tour, check out the local farmers market, do a bike tour, visit a cultural food festival… and that’s all just in September.

I recently contacted their tourism organization to come up with a unique giveaway for my readers so that they can explore more in Whatcom County.

Bellingham Prize Pack

John and I had the opportunity to spend at night at the Hotel Bellwether on our way down to Seattle and we wished we could have stayed longer.

Hotel Bellwether, Bellingham, WA

The rooms are comfortable and luxurious, there’s a great seaside pub and restaurant downstairs, the sea wall is perfect for a stroll or jog, and you won’t want to miss the sunset over the water.

Bellingham is a place that is so close but I haven’t really explored it much! It would be great to have the chance to enjoy a few days there and have the time to see what’s around there!

  6. JenThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 3:45pm PDT

This hotel looks gorgeous! Normally, when we go to the Bellingham area we aren’t there overnight so it would be nice to enjoy a gorgeous hotel, some good eats and a theatre show 🙂

  7. DarcyThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 3:58pm PDT

I would like to spend some time at the nearby Larabee State Park.

  8. Lori-Vancouver BCThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 4:00pm PDT

I discovered a beautiful quaint little area of Bellingham called Fairhaven.
I would love to go back there to enjoy & walk around the area, have lunch, smell the flowers and hopefully check out the farmers market while I’m there.

  9. DarrenThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 4:02pm PDT

That would be a wonderful date night idea- dinner, theater, overnight stay and a nice drive up along Chukanut and around the bay. With the chaos of back to school, my wife certainly could use a getaway…

  10. KateThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 4:05pm PDT

I’d love to take the time to explore Bellingham, rather than stopping at Trader Joe’s then driving right through!

  11. LizzieThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 4:05pm PDT

We love to getaway to Bellingham to seek all the special things it has to offer, such as being close to the ocean (Crabbing is at its prime right now!), Trader Joe’s and all the other fun stores we don’t get here in Canada. Wine is cheap, and the food is fab. I love Bellingham!!

  12. Samantha CThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 4:15pm PDT

Wow, I didn’t even know such a cute hotel existed!

  19. CaroleMThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 4:51pm PDT

  26. LindsayThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 5:37pm PDT

I love Bellingham and would love to see it through visiting eyes instead of my husband living there for a bit (about a year). I’d love to stay at a hotel instead of an apt 😉

Boundary Bay has the best pulled pork nachos. mmm.

  27. DonnaThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 5:40pm PDT

All towns/cities have their own special personality but of most times people just pass through or make a quick pit stop without discovering it’s charm. I’d like to know the side of Bellingham that’s not Bellis Fair or Trader Joes. It has an old downtown area where I’ve stopped for lunch before but I know there’s even more to discover!

  28. KatieThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 5:52pm PDT

I would love to check out Bellingham more. I had one of the best Mexican food meals I’ve ever had there and would like to spend more time enjoying the activities it has to offer.

  29. KevinThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 5:55pm PDT

I know nothing else about Bellingham other than Bellis Fair, would be good to explore.

  30. JenThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 5:57pm PDT

  32. AmandaThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 6:50pm PDT

Haven’t been to Bellingham since a high school trip to Bellis Fair in 199something. It would be interesting to explore it as an adult.

  33. Donna LThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 7:24pm PDT

This hotel looks so cozy! We always rip down the I5 on our way to Seattle. Bellingham sounds like a lovely spot to take a breather. The pictures remind me of some up island communites on Vancouver Island.

  34. belindaThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 7:35pm PDT

I passed by there so many times on my way to my exams, but have not had time to explore the area.

  35. Michael KwanThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 7:47pm PDT

I’ve been down to Bellingham several times, but sadly, I’ve never ventured beyond the Bellis Fair area on Meridian. There has to be more to see than just that one street, right? 🙂

  36. ChadThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 7:50pm PDT

I love downtown Bellingham, and would love to re-explore/continue exploring the area!

  37. AndreaThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 7:53pm PDT

  38. AmyThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 8:12pm PDT

I like to hang out in downtown Bellingham for its pretty small town feel. There’s a good taco truck near the Toyota dealership too.

  39. BrendaThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 8:16pm PDT

I’ve been over the border many times but always on the way to a more southern city. It’d be nice to stop and explore Bellingham since I’ve gone by it so many times.

  49. GeraldThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 8:51pm PDT

I love all the old preserved buildings in both downtown Bellingham and in Fairhaven. For me, an added delight is the many second hand bookshops in both locations. And a wonderful new Art Gallery in downtown Bellingham.
    Mmmmm, time for a trip!

  50. lorThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 9:04pm PDT

Bellingham is so close & cute – always meant to spend more time poking around Fairhaven.

I would love to explore Bellingham!

  55. BenjaminThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 9:49pm PDT

I would like to explore Bellingham because it would be a great first anniversary gift for my wife. We’d have an amazing place to stay (yay for us) after going to the Brew Pub (yay for me) before going to the show (yay for her). We both have enjoyed the vibe when I’ve dragged her down for some ice cream @ Mallard’s and to be on the actual coast would make it such an oasis after she worked 7 days straight OT to make up for me not working. Somehow, she keeps me around and by providing her with some away time from what’s going on right now, I’d be able to show her how much I love that she doesn’t give up on me. I apologize for the sappiness but I had to put it out there. I’m so amazed that she said ‘yes’ when I proposed and then she said ‘I do’ again last year (and a few days). So, to return the favour and show her a little slice of Bellingham by the sea would be wonderful.

  56. VanessaThursday, September 8th, 2011 — 10:40pm PDT

I would love to explore Bellingham because it is the location of Mount Baker

Ive been through Bellingham a few times but never spent the night! I believe truly knowing a city is staying there at least overnight and experiencing the sights, tours and just plain getting out of your car! Doing an activity makes a trip soo much more enjoyable! Even if its more expensive ! I would love to see the real Bellingham.

  65. RebeccaFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 2:54am PDT

I’d love to go, as it’s been years since I’ve been there.

Bellingham is one my my favourite spots to visit. The old district of Fairhaven is beautiful and I would love to explore more of the area!

  82. VictoriaFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:05am PDT

Would love to explore more of Bellingham – I’m guilty of only going for Target and Trader Joe’s like you said! lol. Plus we’re getting married in less than a month and the stress has been ridiculous. A night away is much needed!

  83. DavidFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:06am PDT

Normally I visit Belingham to tend to my American mailbox (cheap shipping, ya!) and I’m back in Canada within the hour. I’d love to spend some time there, the hotel looks amazing!

  84. DarylFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:07am PDT

Never stayed in Bellingham only shopping for the day. It would be nice to stay the night and see what else the city has to offer.

  85. Stella PetersonFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:09am PDT

It’s the perfect place to reconnect with my hubby!!

  86. Ben GarfinkelFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:10am PDT

You’re right, I’ve never really thought of Bellingham as anything other than a quick shopping outpost that’s closer than Seattle. Or a rest stop. Past forays into areas of the city off the beaten track have left us curious, but we’ve never really explored it as we felt we should have. It’d be nice to have a reason to skip the same old stuff that keeps us from getting to know the real Bellingham, and maybe get us there more often!

  87. Julia SousaFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:10am PDT

That looks amazing, I would love to go to Bellingham for other reason than shopping!

  88. Art B.Friday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:11am PDT

I really enjoy Bellingham. We makefrequent day trips there but would welcome an opportunity to explore a little longer.

  89. MarinaFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:11am PDT

Last time I was in downtown Bellingham, it was to see Loreena McKennitt at the local theatre, which was absolutely beautiful!! Very old, I think. We also stumbled across a pub/bar that was serving pizza with homemade vegan cheese. I’d love to have the time to explore the area a little more!

  90. Ryan CousineauFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:16am PDT

I love avoiding customs brokerage fees by going to a drop-box service on that side of the border.

  91. rachelFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:18am PDT

i would love to explore bellingham because everytime i go, my trips consist of shopping and eating.

  92. Theresa FrazaoFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:21am PDT

I would love to take a girlfriend for a weekend of fun as I’ve been neglecting my gf’s – I just got married and my new husband and I also just moved into our new apartment – first time homeowners so that was an ordeal and a half! And with the wedding and honeymoon and family visits, I could really use some girl time!!! This prize pack you’ve put together looks amazing. What a fun weekend that would be. Thanks Miss604!

  93. AdrienneFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:23am PDT

  103. DebbieFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 11:25am PDT

Normally we just drive straight through Bellingham, or stop at the Mall. It would be really nice to actually stop over night! The Hotel looks awesome, and a mini break would be just the thing before the weather turns rainy again 🙂

  104. SanazFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 11:35am PDT

Because it’s in our backyard so would be cool to check the city out.

We’ve been meaning to explore Bellingham beyond Target & Trader Joe’s ever since some friends spent a weekend there and can’t stop raving about it! It was our anniversary this week but we were both too busy to stop and celebrate – so this would be the perfect excuse to raise a glass to 9 years of wedded bliss 😉

  106. HeatherFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 11:47am PDT

I would love to explore Bellingham because I know there is more than Trader Joe’s and Target, but I never seem to have enough time to see the rest!

  107. AlakittenFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 12:22pm PDT

for the SHOPPING! and maybe the casino too.

  108. JennFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 12:33pm PDT

My girlfriends are coming to visit, and winning this package would allow us to have a “girlfriends getaway” in Bellingham. We could book a second room, and pick up another two tickets to the theatre. We’ll have dinner at Boundary Bay Brewery, and get gelato at Chocolate Necessities. This overnight stay gives us a chance to shop, talk, relax, and really enjoy each other’s company. Thank you for making this opportunity possible! It is much appreciated!

  128. Johnny AFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 6:47pm PDT

I want to check out Chuckanut Drive!! I hear it’s gorgeous! (That, and my bf and I had our first date at BB Brewing back in 2003)

Bellingham, with all its poetry and balance, the sea, the wonder of an original Boundary Bay IPA, the Bellweather hotel with it’s ambiance and mystery, is all the reason in the world for an idyllic journey, one I would forever embellish and dream of….ever more.

  131. KarenFriday, September 9th, 2011 — 10:00pm PDT

Summer was just not long enough. It would be great to have a relaxed weekend down in Bellingham.

I drive to Bellingham very often, having the Nexus Pass allows me to cross faster.
Best tacos in town are at La Gloria, authentic Mexican, salsas to die for (if u like spicy).
Last weekend visited the Fairheaven area, beautiful.
Would love to win and get the chance to stay for a weekend and visit all the other great places around Bellingham!!

  190. NicWednesday, September 14th, 2011 — 11:10am PDT

Bellingham has changed so much since I went there on the way to Birch Bay as a kid. I’d love to be able to spend some time there (rather than hop in for food on the way to Seattle).

  191. JarrahWednesday, September 14th, 2011 — 3:38pm PDT

I’m sure there’s more to it than just outlet malls. I’d love to explore the real attractions.

  192. KLThursday, September 15th, 2011 — 5:16am PDT

Here are some gems of Bellingham i’ve been lucky enough to find and would be great for this field trip: make the most of the day and be driving up to the Old Town Cafe in time for breakfast. Wander the Saturday Farmer’s Market, definitely one of the best around. stock up on picnic supplies at the Community Co op (puts Trader Joe’s to shame:)) and head down the beautiful seaside Chuckanut Drive. Take in the view at The Woods Coffee and walk latte in hand along the boardwalk, or while perusing the shelves at the amazing Village Books in Fairhaven. to REALLY indulge, book a massage at the Chysalis Inn on the waterfront; it’s surprising such a stunning place remains somewhat secret. Less picturesque, (in a strip mall:)) but another must-do is the Miang Kum appetizer at On Rice Thai Restaurant. Now i’m craving it and driving down for lunch is under serious consideration:).

  193. NavThursday, September 15th, 2011 — 7:47pm PDT

I go to Bellingham often but just to shop..I would love to go in the morning, spend the day exploring and stay the night at the hotel bellwether!

  195. RobThursday, September 15th, 2011 — 10:18pm PDT

Bellingham looks wonderful but I’ve only been through to drive to Seattle. I would love a chance to stop and smell the roses!

  196. BrentThursday, September 15th, 2011 — 10:43pm PDT

Love B-ham & Old Fairhaven. BB Brewery has always been one of my favourites. We’ve camped at Larabee State Park a few times but it would be wonderful to stay in a hotel! Thanks for the great contest.

  197. LaurelThursday, September 15th, 2011 — 11:53pm PDT

I love visiting Bellingham! It has so much to offer in not only great shopping deals, but the cozy seaside village appeal of its waterfront. Everytime I’m near the ocean I feel like I’m miles from home and on a mini-cation!

  198. MaeFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 12:17am PDT

Your entry on your Bellwether stay opened my eyes to even thinking about Bellingham as a stayover destination rather than a along-the-way location.

  199. ChristinaFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 9:21am PDT

Bellingham has more than Bellis Fair to explore! What a great prize. & so close to home

  200. SumiFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 9:33am PDT

A close weekend getaway! The seaside looks neat, all i’ve done is gone by bellisfair so it would be fun to explore Bellingham!

  206. ZahidaFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 10:39am PDT

We absolutely love Bellingham but only really discovered how charming it is recently. There’s so much to see and do and we’ve barely scratched the surface. We also LOVE the antique markets there – quite fascinating. And hey, tomorrow is my birthday and our anniversary is next week. A vacation would be lovely!

  207. VinnieFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 10:42am PDT

A friend of mine lives in Bellingham but I haven’t seen him since March! Reunite us, would you?

  208. HeatherFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 11:01am PDT

I’ve heard Bellingham is a great place to bike, also my partner lives in Seattle and we don’t see each other nearly enough, something like this would be a fantastic treat for us!

  209. AmyRFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 11:05am PDT

  213. TimFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 12:25pm PDT

I just want to take my wife on a sweet date where she can leave the kids and be a grownup for an evening!

  214. WesFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 12:26pm PDT

I would love to take my wife down for a night away from our lovely kids. We have only had 1 night away from both kids in 3 years. My wife has had to deal with a fair bit in the last year. She had to change jobs. We were scheduled for a two night get-a-way but had to cancel as her mother need open heart surgery. I work mostly nights so she has to deal with the kids, school and sports activities. So think this would be a nice get-a-way for her. I am hoping to win even though it will cost me more money as my wife likes to shop in the states whenever othe odd chance arrives.

  215. Duncan StephenFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 1:43pm PDT

For the longest time, the only thing that Bellingham brought to mind was outlet stores and malls. Ugh! Then my wife and I stumbled upon Fairhaven, a quaint community full of heritage. There’s a whole lot more to Bellinghmam, and we’d love to explore some more.

  216. Carole CaffreyFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 1:45pm PDT

I usually drag my husband to Bellingham for shopping. I didn’t know there was a lovely quaint are of Bellingham to see. I think my husband deserves a trip that doesn’t involve shopping. Well maybe a little shopping. How can I resist.

  217. CherrylFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 4:28pm PDT

I would love to explore Bellingham for it’s beautiful parks, hikes and it’s wonderful beer!

  219. LeannaFriday, September 16th, 2011 — 8:37pm PDT

It’s interesting that Bellingham is being pitched as much more than Target and Trader Joe’s because I only ever visit to shop. It would be great to check out the area apart from the mall.

School is already so intense and I need a night away!
