Tony Parsons Joins CBC Vancouver
byAt a press conference at the CBC Vancouver broadcast centre this afternoon it was announced that legendary BC anchor Tony Parsons would be co-hosting the local supper-hour newscast.
Tony Parsons, who I grew up watching on BCTV, anchored his final newscast on Global TV’s News Hour in December of 2009.
Around that time but published a book but Parsons was off the air during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
He then returned to television with CHEK-TV in Victoria as the anchor of their 10:00pm newscast in March. According to today’s press release, a deal between the CBC and CHEK-TV has been made that will see the local news from CBC Vancouver simulcast on CHEK-TV in Victoria.
“Tony Parsons has been synonymous with local news in Vancouver for 35 years and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the CBC News Vancouver team,†said Johnny Michel, Managing Director, BC Region, CBC. “He is the most recognizable face in local news and has an innate gift to get to the heart of what matters for Vancouverites.”
Parsons will be co-hosting with Gloria Macarenko on CBC Vancouver from 5:00pm until 6:30pm and will then appear specifically on CHEK at 10:00pm.
Update April 13, 2010
I had the chance to speak with Tony this afternoon, you can see his responses to a few quick questions in the video above.

This is pretty big news in the Vancouver/BC market. I didn’t see the 10 PM spot on CHEK as a threat to anyone, but this new development is definitely going to affect Global and CTV’s market share.
On a related note – I didn’t realize Tony Parsons had a spot on CKNW prior to leaving Global – does anyone know more about that?
Dave
@Dave corrected the CKNW info, that was an error.
Global just isn’t what it use to be! I just bet the back story was Tony was forced out at Global. I am glad to see he is back and I hope he gives Global the beating they deserve for dropping him like a sack of potatoes. I will never watch their newscast again.
I made a post about it here when he left:

But what has happened to Ian Hanomansingh?
It was just weird to watch CBC tonight. I would never have expected to see Tony pop up there. It might make me watch CBC sometimes.
@Judie – Ian is moving on to The National, but staying in Vancouver. He’s going to be doing in-depth reporting and working as a replacement anchor, when Peter’s away.
Good choice to bring Tony to CBC. Can’t understand why people enjoy the glossy, plastic corporate faces of CTV, especially Pamela.Do not like Global expect for maybe Squire.
Tony is long and trusted face to BC viewers and brings experience. I personally like him a lot. I grew up with him and don’t mind still seeing him, age is not an issue.
Will now make CBC my dinner hour news!
Will miss having Ian next to Gloria but he is off to better things I suppose. Mansbridge better watch his back.
I still remember him reporting the news when I was a wee kid. I remember him and Pamela Martin were a great pair too.
@Robert Dall: I work for Global. I don’t recall seeing anyone “push” Tony out the door. I was definitely sad on his last day.
Glad to see Tony still working hard for Vancouver!
Does this mean Tony travels to the Victoria CHEK studio from the CTV Vancouver studio every night?
i believe its another sad day in broadcasting, this old guard miss
information gods have controlled and led the charge in over throwing
governments like bc ndp and now the fed Tories, all by the trick
and hand of the criminal liberals, federally and provincially.
these are the crafty trick manipulators who can take a story that
makes the liberals look bad and manipulate it cleverly to make the
media opponents look bad. ohhh so greasy… i think phony Parsons
should go back to where he came from, where the liberal crockery is
naturally distributed, evil Ontario.
