Campaign to Save Bear Creek
byA proposed road development to expand 84th Avenue in Surrey right through the Southern tip of Bear Creek Park has residents up in arms.
Bear Creek Park in Surrey is a pillar of the community featuring a playground and pool, 5 acres of gardens, a track, forest trails, meadows, and the Surrey Arts Centre. Bear Creek itself flows right through the park and across much of the City of Surrey. A proposed development to expand 84th straight through the park (instead of stopping at King George Highway) is meeting some strong opposition.
The two-hectare park hosts Bear Creek and with this proposal, the nearby King Creek will also be affected. Both spawning channels for Sockeye Salmon and some even call Bear Creek Surrey’s own “Stanley Park” [Surrey Leader]
“Coun. Linda Hepner said she tentatively supports the idea because it does not make sense to have such a large area in the middle of the city without a road through it.” [CBC] This plan has been “on the books” for the last 20 years and this is the fourth time council has considered the extension of the road. [Surrey Leader]
There is an online petition that currently has 2545 signatures and local papers have been receiving Letters to the Editor for months about the issue. Council will be taking their final vote October 5th.

I love Bear Creek, on both my visits to BC I have been there, once in summer and once in winter and the part where this road would go, although not in the main parkland area is so gorgeous and quiet, it is like an oasis in the middle of all the built up area around it. I would be very sad to see a road built there and this is how things disappear, a little bit here, a little bit there, until there is nothing left.
I’d have to investigate further but from what I know of the park (been going there for over about 30 years) this is a pretty unused portion of the park which has powerlines going through it now anyway. It’s a huge road block and would relieve a lot of congestion in the area.
I agree with Jenny, There is too much traffic congestion and this expansion may help there not be as many accidents at 88th & KG Hwy. The main entrance to Bear Creek Park.
My children have used that park for 20 years and I do not see an issue with the roadway as long as it stays on the southern tip.
I think this road is a necessary thing. Sure we could do the whole on ramps for 88th to king george hwy(KGH) at a higher cost. The one problem with doing that your making and even bigger gap for people to speed down the KGH. Its almost like promoting an inner city freeway.
People need to learn that we are a long way from giving up are cars here in Surrey. You can build up transit to this amazing system but most people around here arent gonna give up there cars. We are an extremely quick growing city and this is the best way we can fix a major problem in are city. Plus could give people a safer biking route
Online petition at http://www.savebearcreekpark.com. A rally and public meeting is to be held on Oct 2 7pm at 8383-140st Surrey BC Bear Creek Community Church. All welcome. Attend the City Council meeting at Surrey City Hall Oct 5th at 4pm!
If you had a good look at the very wide swath of forest including many large trees that would be cut, and understood that the salmon – that have recently returned in two creeks – would be destroyed in the process of building bridges, and if you stood in the forest and heard the many birds and rustling of small creatures, you would vote NO, do not cause any disturbance to Bear Creek Park.
congratulations to the defenders of the park.
