Blogathon 2009 – My Profile
byPost #4 of #49 – Over the next 24 hours I will be raising funds for the Union Gospel Mission during Blogathon 2009 by writing a blog post every 30 minutes. Please consider donating to my cause to keep my going until 6am PT July 26th.
Blogathon is happening all over the world right now but in Vancouver some of the participants are gathered at Workspace so that we can offer support to each other and have some awesome guests stop by to cheer us on.
I planned on profiling some of the other bloggers joining me here today but I thought a good place to start would be to introduce myself and explain why I’m doing this.
The reasons are fairly simple… I have a voice, and I suppose a pretty big one when it comes to this town, and I want to use it for good.
I try to keep the posts on my site positive and highlight all that is great about our region with each and every entry I publish. However, thousands are not as fortunate as I am — they don’t have computers, nor do they have a bed to sleep in. They don’t have a meal planned and they’re not sure how to get through the week… or to tomorrow morning. They could be suffering from mental illness, an addiction, or are simply down on their luck and seeking help. I also know that at any given point in time, a friend, a family member, or even I could end up in an unfortunate situation where the help of others sure would come in handy.
I don’t have a lot of money, I never have, but I do know that I have an outlet where I can inform people of issues, promote great causes, and entertain. If I can use this to reach out to my audience and support a cause, you can sure as heck bet that I’m going to do it.
Over the last year I’ve hosted the Best of 604 Awards (which raised about $2,000 for the Vancouver Food Bank), Twestival Vancouver ($4,000 for the global charity), and Blogathon. There is no doubt in my mind that my readers are generous, caring people and by offering up quality content, and a couple neat prizes now and then, I hope I can supply enough on Miss604.com to thank them.
Stationed behind the front desk at Workspace, the image above caught my eye and I’m certain it will motivate me for the rest of the day. “The good news is, you have an opportunity to change the world.” I plan on doing just that, one small Blogathon step at a time.
