130 Million Girls Aren’t in School: Help Change This and You Could Win

One Girl Can Scholarship Program

Around the world, 130 million girls aren’t in school. The primary drivers are poverty and gender inequality. A girl without an education has limited options for her future. In most cases, she will marry young and begin a family of her own while still a teenager. Without a viable income source, she will remain trapped in the cycle of poverty for the remainder of her life.

Education is the key to breaking this cycle. Education gives girls financial independence and the ability to determine their own future. Statistics related to child marriage, HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence are significantly improved by education. Educated girls are the key to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty, and their children grow up healthier and better educated.

You can help a bright and deserving girl stay in high school this year. One Girl Can has just accepted 88 new students into their scholarship program, now all they need is a sponsor! Contribute towards a girl’s education and you’ll receive photos and handwritten letters from her as she progresses.

The three-week festival presents mesmerizing program of radical theatre, innovative dance, and experimental music. PuSh’s line-up ignites meaningful discussions on the world around us.

The six world premiere performances will be presented by contemporary dance organization Company 605; boundary-breaking dance company MACHiNENOiSY; composer and musical director Joelysa Pankanea; Dora Award-winning dub poet and actor D’BI; the performers of Kimmortal & Immigrant Lessons; and Guatemalan performance artist Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa.

Almost half of the program — 11 performances — will be Canadian premieres, including a suite of three sound-based works from Japan by ASUNA, Marginal Consort, and Tetsuya Umeda; Dancenorth Australia featuring music from Indonesian band Senyawa; and a piece from Taiwanese choreographer Liu Kuan-Hsiang.

The PuSh Film Series will present movies perfectly paired to the program, and PuSh Assembly will stimulate dialogue through free talks for the public and industry networking events.

A few years ago I thought it would be fun to start a tradition of posting a look back at Vancouver on New Year’s Day, offering a glimpse at our fair city 100 years ago. Thanks to the diligent work of the City of Vancouver Archives, and with notes thanks to the legendary Chuck Davis, I can continue this throwback each year:
