Inspired by the life story of Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté, an enormously innovative early twentieth century composer, the drama follows her 10-year marriage with the celebrated expressionist painter Walter Gramatté. Set to a live score of Eckhardt-Gramatté’s solo violin works, the multimedia presentation blends movement and text to tell a heartbreaking tale of adventure, poverty, and strife.
Created by 2017 Siminovitch Protégé Prize-winning playwright and actor Christine Quintana and gifted violinist Molly MacKinnon, Never the Last was conceived out of MacKinnon’s curiosity with Eckhardt-Gramatté.
Born in Moscow in 1899, Eckhardt-Gramatté studied violin, piano, and composition at the Conservatoire de Paris. She embarked on several concert tours in Western Europe where she performed her own compositions. During her research, MacKinnon discovered that many of Eckhardt-Gramatté’s innovative and experimental works were nearly lost in her male-dominated field before her immigration to Canada in 1950. MacKinnon approached Quintana with a vision to create Never the Last and help bring this gifted female composer’s tremendous life and legacy to the forefront.
Performed by MacKinnon, Quintana, and Anton Lipovetsky, the love story unfolds in Berlin, 1919, where violin prodigy and composer Sophie-Carmen meets Walter, a German painter and war veteran in poor health. She is passionate, rude, and musically gifted; he is witty, emotional, and compassionate. Yet, their chemistry is undeniable.

A colourful display made a low key appearance this week on the side of the YWCA Hotel on Beatty Street. Until today, YWCA Hotel Vancouver had been quietly building, looking to add 65 rooms in a new tower. But as soon as the signs went up, locals are slowly realizing that this hotel is a social enterprise.
Many guests didn’t realize that YWCA Hotel Vancouver is a social enterprise providing affordable accommodations for all travellers while generating revenue that sustains YWCA Metro Vancouver’s community service work. When guests stay at the YWCA Hotel, they are directly supporting the many women, children and families who are accessing YWCA’s services every week.
“As a not for profit, 100% of our hotel profits are used to support YWCA’s work to help women, single mothers and families,” Remarks Arthur Mills, VP of Hotel and Housing at YWCA Metro Vancouver “So, this expansion will let us do even more good for our community.”
You may recognize a few familiar faces on the construction billboard, Kingsley Bailey from VancouverTicket.com and yours truly. I’m so happy to support the YWCA Hotel and YWCA Metro Vancouver and I encourage you to continue to book your staycations and visitors’ stays at the highly-rated hotel during the construction period.
The construction is projected to finish by June 2020. YWCA Hotel is still open for business during this period. Follow the YWCA Hotel on Instagram and Facebook for updates in the meantime.
Seven Tyrants Theatre, Vancouver’s Jessie Award winning independent theatre company, presents King Richard and His Women,a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III by Vancouver based playwright Camyar Chai.
King Richard and His Women
When: April 11 – 19, 2019 Where: Tyrant Studios (1019 Seymour Street, Vancouver) Tickets: $29 available online now »
The production, the third of their season, is directed by Camyar Chai and stars Leanna Brodie as “Elizabeth”, Ghislaine Dote as “Anne”, Sandra Ferens as “The Duchess” and Linda Quibell as “Margaret” with Daniel Deorksen as “King Richard”. The production features scenography by Camyar Chai, sound and music design by Daniel Deorksen and lighting design by David Thomas Newham. The play will be performed at Tyrant Studios, the company’s newly renovated performance venue located above the historic Penthouse Nightclub. Recently converted by the company to a studio theatre, these upstairs rooms once hosted exclusive parties and performances by music legends like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr, and Frank Sinatra.
In this modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘History of King Richard lll’, the Wars of the Roses are transformed into a war of the conscience. Wounded in battle and in an altered state between life and death, the titular character is confronted by the women he has loved, hated and destroyed. Together, the ghosts of his deeds create a dark and fantastical world in which he, Richard, is called to account. Shakespeare’s beautiful language spoken through an absurdist allegory of corrupting power that is sure to resonate with the times.
