Rollerskate Vancouver is excited to once again bring some funk and glitter to the rink at Robson Square. The 2019 roller skating season kicks off on Saturday, April 20^th with a day of events on eight wheels, and with the help of new sponsor Rolla Skate Club, this year’s events will be bigger and better than ever.

Admission: Adults $15, kids 12 & under $10, skate rentals $10 – purchase online in advance.

The good times start at 4:00pm with the All-Ages Family Skate, a roller derby bout presented by Rolla Skate Club at 6:00pm, then it’s time for the grown-ups to get down with DJ K-Tel at the Disco-themed Adult Skate (ages 16+) from 7:00pm to 10:00pm.

Rental skates will be available, provided by the Rolla Skate Club truck, but sizes are limited. Skaters are encouraged to purchase tickets and reserve skates in advance online here »

This is just one of many pop-up roller skating events happening at Robson Square this season; Rollerskate Vancouver has a full schedule planned throughout the summer and fall with events on May 11, June 9, July 6, August 30, September 14 and October 5, 2019.

Today, the Vancouver International Airport (“YVR“) is thrilled to share that they have once again been named Best Airport in North America at the Skytrax World Airport Awards. Recognized as the global benchmark of airport excellence, this marks YVR’s 10th consecutive year receiving this accolade (here’s the post I wrote about their first award of the series back in 2010).

Skytrax also recognized Changi Airport, which was voted the World’s Best Airport for 7th consecutive year at the 2019 World Airport Awards.

Elements Film Festival will be returning to TELUS World of Science April 8-14, 2019. In collaboration with Science World, Vancouver’s second annual environmental film festival will feature programming for all ages including films, presentations and panel discussions on a broad range of topics impacting our planet.

Tickets: Tickets available online now. Festival passes are available and include admission to evening programming April 11-13, and daytime admission to TELUS World of Science on April 13 and 14.

Featuring films from international, Canadian and BC filmmakers, the festival provides a platform to experience different points of view on a range of important topics including wildlife conservation, climate change, plastic pollution in our oceans, poaching, habitat loss, invasive species, and environmental law.

The theme of this year’s festival is #STAYCURIOUS. By fostering appreciation of environmental and science-based issues, the festival hopes to inspire curiosity and conversation.

The daytime schedules on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 will feature a series of family friendly short films on a range of wildlife and conservation topics, as well as feature films in the OMNIMAX Theatre, and topical panel discussions. The evening schedules will include feature film screenings and special presentations.

Special Presentations and Panels:

• Thursday, April 11, 7:30pm, Science Theatre – The screening of Living in the Future’s Past, co-produced by lifelong environmentalist Jeff Bridges and filmmakerSusan Kucera. This visually stunning film reflects on the true cost of fossil fuel energy. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Susan Kucera.

• Friday, April 12, 7:30pm, OMNIMAX Theatre – Join National Geographic Explorer and star of NatGeo’s UNTAMED Filipe DeAndrade for a passionate evening of film and photography. Filipe will share a special presentation detailing his adventures in the Serengeti, the jungles of Costa Rica and the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Filipe will also be doing a matinee presentation on Saturday, April 13 at 12pm for all ages.

• Saturday, April 13, 2:00pm, Science Theatre – Panel Discussion, Our Southern Resident Killer Whales: Do they have a future? Join a panel of experts in discussing the challenges West Coast orcas face and efforts to save them. Moderated by Science World CEO, Dr. Scott Sampson.

• Saturday, April 13, 8:00pm, OMNIMAX Theatre – A decade after delivering his “Legacy Lecture” at The Chan Centre in 2009, Elements presents Force of Nature, a retrospective film that weaves together scenes from the places and events that shaped Dr. David Suzuki’s career, with his enduring message of environmental stewardship. Dr. Suzuki will be sharing opening remarks prior to the screening of the film.

• Sunday, April 14, 2:00pm – Panel Discussion, The Future of Energy. Join expert panelists working in fields that are examining and developing new technologies for the future of energy, learn what is on the horizon and how British Columbians are contributing to the effort. Moderated by Sherry Yano, David Suzuki Foundation.

Daytime films, panels and speakers are included with Science World admission. Evening feature films, speakers and social events are for ages 19+ and require a purchased ticket.

The SAF Vaisakhi Fest is a free community event that will celebrate the festival of Vaisakhi through live performances, turban tying, martial arts, face painting, and more in Surrey on April 14th.

Sikhi Awareness Foundation, SAF International, is organizing this event to celebrate Vaisakhi and spread awareness about the charity’s initiatives. SAF is a registered Canadian charity supporting impoverished children and families in India.

Every April, millions of Sikhs world-wide celebrate Vaisakhi Day, marking the New Year. One of the largest celebrations occurs in Surrey, where hundreds of thousands of people attend the annual Vaisakhi Parade and Celebration – happening this year on April 20th -making it one of the largest Vaisakhi parades outside India!

You’ve probably driven by it on the Sea to Sky Highway, and you’ve most certainly seen its Mill Building in movies and TV shows as it’s a popular Sci-Fi filming location, but the Britannia Mine Museum is home to a National Historic Site of Canada, some cool local history, and an exciting new high-tech theatrical experience.

BOOM! At the Britannia Mine Museum

BOOM! is a live-action, multi-sensory special effects show that brings the historic 96-year-old Mill No. 3 building back to life. The theatrical spectacle will transport visitors back in time to the 1920s when the Mine was booming as one of the largest copper producers in the British Commonwealth.

The show shares the magical story of the awe-inspiring 20-storey architectural marvel as one of North America’s last gravity-fed concentrator mills, as it processed precious minerals from the ore extracted from the mine.

The museum oversees 23 historic industrial, administrative and domestic buildings, over 7,000 artifacts, 9,500 archive photos and 3,000 archival documents and maps! Since turning into a museum in the 1970s, the mine’s society has stewarded its transformation into a historic site as well as environmental cleanup that has since seen herring and other sea life back to Howe Sound.
