Dan’s Legacy invites youth to a celebration of gender diversity with art, fashion, and performances at Trans Extravaganza.

Dan's Legacy Trans Extravaganza

Dan’s Legacy Presents Trans Extravaganza

Where: Red Gate Arts Society (1965 Main St, Vancouver)
When: February 1, 2020 from 12:00pm to 7:00pm
Admission: Free (donations accepted). For ages 13-25. Scent reduced, universal washroom, ASL interpretation, accessible, and allies welcome!

This event is a celebration of the Q2STNBI community, with opportunities for queer, two-spirit, trans, non-binary and inter-sex youth to learn more about the resources available to them, discover identity pride and increase their confidence by developing leadership and organization skills.

“The Trans Extravaganza is an event designed and hosted by the youth taking part in our Queer Femme art therapy program,” says Barbara Coates, Dan’s Legacy’s executive director. “The youth felt the group was missing diversity and not meeting the needs of the community in the way we had intended. We hope this event will help queer youth discover identity pride, increase their confidence, and become more aware of all the resources available to them in the community.”

Some of the challenges queer and trans youth face are: acceptance from family and community; knowledge of and access to appropriate medical and mental health services, clothing that is reflective of their identity; instruments that help with body dysphoria, and gender-confirming
procedures not covered by provincial healthcare.

The event will have speaker panels, workshops on Two-Spirit medicines and ceremonies, mindfulness and medical information, and a quiet space for people to rest and create art. Entrance is free but donations to Dan’s Legacy are gratefully accepted. Funds raised help Dan’s Legacy provide trauma and culturally informed counselling to at-risk youth in Metro Vancouver.

If you cannot attend the event but want to support Dan’s Legacy, text DANS to 45678 to make an automatic $10 donation.

Electric Company Theatre presents the world premiere of Carmen Aguirre’s spellbinding new work, Anywhere But Here, from February 4–15, 2020 at the Vancouver Playhouse.  Set in 1979 on the desert border between the United States and Mexico, Anywhere But Here is a psycho-social-spiritual-physical journey that represents the inner turmoil of exile.

Anywhere But Here

Where: Vancouver Playhouse (600 Hamilton St, Vancouver)
When: February 4–15, 2020
Tickets: Available online now from $19.99 »

Directed by Juliette Carrillo with set design by Christopher Acebo — an acclaimed Chicanx duo making their Canadian debut — this haunting blend of dark comedy and magical realism is a vibrant celebration of Latinx theatre that chronicles the many paths and timelines, real and imagined, we take to discover the truth — the truth about who we are, and where we may be headed.

Produced in association with Playwrights Theatre Centre and presented with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, the play introduces a host of fantastical characters who have experienced the pull of home, the ache of displacement, and the harsh realities of the borderlands in Trump’s America.

The stellar cast is a borderless group comprised of Augusto Bitter, Alen Dominguez, Alexandra Lainfiesta, Shawn Lall, Nadeem Phillip, Christine Quintana, Michelle Rios, AJ Simmons, and Manuela Sosa. All of these gifted actors have a direct connection to immigration as first- or second-generation immigrants to Canada with roots in Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, El Salvador, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Pakistan.

Juno Award-winning hip hop artist Shad will make his theatrical debut with his rap pieces, co-written with Aguirre.

Vive les Voyageurs Festival at Fort Langley 2020

This weekend is Parks Canada’s 11th annual Vive les Voyageurs Festival at Fort Langley. Discover French-Canadian culture — past and present — through interactive presentations and treats like maple taffy and poutine. Reflect on the role of French-Canadian trappers, interpreters and voyageurs played in shaping the history of Fort Langley and Canada.

Vive les Voyageurs Festival at Fort Langley

Where: Fort Langley National Historic Site (23433 Mavis Ave, Fort Langley)
When: Saturday, January 25 & Sunday, January 26, 2020 10:00am to 5:00pm
Admission: Regular admission fees apply ($7.90 per adult and $6.60 per senior), while admission is free for youth (17 and under) and annual pass holders.

It’s a great time to purchase the 2020 annual passes at the early bird price, just $16.05 per adult and $13.49 per senior.

All ages will have fun learning more about ‘la culture canadienne-française’ at Vive les Voyageurs. There’s room to explore, fun hands-on activities and a dedicated children’s play area and the festival is even better. New this year, kids won’t want to miss the “Tiny Boat Races” activity at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm. Families will also enjoy interactive presentations like the Métis jig workshop and French-Canadian music performances.

lelәm’ at the fort café will offer poutine, tourtière, hot drinks and heritage-inspired treats, while outside visitors can watch hot maple syrup poured on snow transform into tasty taffy.

Fort Langley National Historic Site reflects the rich and varied heritage of our nation and provides an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about our diverse history. Many of the Hudson’s Bay Company workers—including those who came to work at Fort Langley—were French-Canadian. Many developed legendary reputations for their work transporting furs by canoe across the wild reaches of the country. They helped negotiate trade with Indigenous communities, and navigated great rivers carrying bundles of fur over portages.
