The rush of the holidays is slowing, the temperature is dropping, and a new year will soon begin. However, just because Santa has come and gone doesn’t mean the festive amusement need to stop! There’s still plenty of winter fun in Vancouver to be had, with many lovely attractions remaining open into 2020.

Goh Ballet’s enchanting adaption of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition we look forward to every year.
With a stunning magical winter backdrop set against the iconic Queen Elizabeth Theatre, guests of Goh Ballet enter into a world of wonder and beauty featuring the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara, The Mouse King and of course – the Nutcracker.
What I love about Goh’s rendition of this classic is the incorporation of up and coming and fiercely talented professional dancers from the National Ballet of China, Ukrainian Shumka Dancers and National Ballet of Canada. They are flawless as they pirouette across the stage with effortless grace.
Goh Ballet’s company of dancers is equally as impressive with their poise, grace, and perfection throughout all their dances. The humour, fun and creativity incorporated into the performance will have you looking forward to coming back again in 2020.

The PuSh International Performing Arts Festival (“PuSh”) presents the Western Canadian premiere of Montreal choreographer Dana Gingras’ visually arresting new work,FRONTERA, for one-night only on January 30th.
Frontera at the PuSh Festival
When: Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 8:00pm Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre (630 Hamilton St, Vancouver) Tickets: Available online now or call (604) 449-6000
Gingras and her internationally lauded dance company, Animals of Distinction, collaborate with the experimental post-rock band Fly Pan Am and members of the UK-based collective United Visual Artists to create a provocative multimedia experience of motion, sound, and light. The dancers on stage explore notions of individual and political agency within a contested space of borderlands — both real and imagined.
In FRONTERA, 10 dancers take to the stage amid pulsing flashes and towering vertical rays of light. The dancers react to the clarion call of the driving music and the whims of the lighting, becoming wildly shifting forms in a singular struggle between impulse and design. Columns of light alternately guide, divide, and entrap the dancers, but ultimately cannot defeat their fearless physicality and ingenuity. Apart from the bodies of the performers, there are no solid structures on stage. Borders, fences, and walls are showcased as luminous virtual constructs — reflecting their roles in our lives.
The scenography by United Visual Artists amplifies Fly Pan Am’s live music and field recordings from David Bryant of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The performance by Animals of Distinction features: Robert Abubo, Justin de Luna, Léna Demnati, Stacey Désilier, Caroline Gravel, Louise Michel Jackson, Mark Sawh Medrano, Koliane Rochon Prom Tep, Sovann Rochon Prom Tep, and Lexi Vajda.
The PuSh International Performing Arts Festival runs January 21 to February 9, 2020. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter for more info.

For our first Christmas together, we went to the dollar store on Denman Street and bought a 2ft Christmas tree for our one collective ornament. My mom gave us two bells tied with ribbon for the tree that you could hide a little scroll inside and write what we gifted to each other that year.
Here’s how we have gone about making memories in Vancouver at Christmas over the years:
Bright Nights and Making Memories in Vancouver at Christmas
John’s first Christmas in Vancouver was technically mine too, I had just moved Downtown and didn’t really know what there was to do during the holidays. We were on a very tight budget since he had recently immigrated and was unable to work, so we did what made us happy each weekend: We took a walk in Stanley Park. Bright Nights Christmas Train was running and so we entered the sparkling forest wonderland with a donation and it became our first Vancouver holiday tradition together.
