The Vancouver Modern Home Tour gives people a chance to explore and view some of the greatest examples of modern residential architecture right in their own city.

Year after year, the self-guided event provides a fun, enlightening day of local sight-seeing and open-house-style visits for lovers of architecture, design, real estate, and anyone who enjoys seeing the inside of some really cool homes, plus anyone on the hunt for ideas and inspiration or professionals with which to work.

Participating homeowners get to show off their cool, modern dwellings to neighbours for a day, and a handful of local architects, builders, and designers get another chance to shine in the spotlight. This tour stands out from other tours by showcasing homes that are modern in design and style and by offering this experience to everyone – not just members of an exclusive club or association.

Festival Highlights

The 2019 Festival proudly presents the Canadian debut of Spain’s Manuel Liñán Company in Baile De Autor (September 14th at the Vancouver Playhouse). Manuel Liñánis one of the main current references in the renewal of both Spanish and flamenco dance

Baile De Autor unites Manuel Liñán as choreographer and performer. After choreographing for other renowned companies such as the Ballet Nacional de España, Nuevo Ballet Español, Rafaela Carrasco, Belen Maya; and having made his mark as a solo dancer, Manuel Liñan sets forth these two facets, which have defined his career. Manuel presents a space in which the director, the author, creates different scenes during the work, breathing life to each element: light, sound, song, guitar, music, dance; a fantasy which creates connecting ties for the artist as choreographer and dancer.

The Festival also features some of the finest Canadian and International Flamenco artists with performances at the intimate Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island:

  • World Premiere “MAGNETIKAE – a personal journey” by La Otra Orilla (Montreal), Waterfront Theatre Thursday, September 26th at 8:00pm
  • World Premiere “Nuevo II” by Flamenco Rosario & Guests (Vancouver/Spain/Mexico), Waterfront Theatre Saturday, September 28th at 8:00pm
  • La Musica del Flamenco” with Victor Kolstee and featuring Manuel Liñán Company Artists (Vancouver/Spain), The Hall at St James Community Square, Friday, September 13th at 8:00pm

…And more! Free events include dance classes for adults, children, or seniors; pop-up performances; “Understanding Flamenco”- a lecture demonstration by Flamenco Rosario; and Creative Artistic Residency: Open rehearsal & studio showing.

It Takes a Village Whitecaps Exhibit at the BC Sports Hall of Fame

Comments 27 by Rebecca Bollwitt

The BC Sports Hall of Fame is one of my favourite places in Downtown Vancouver. It’s got everything I like in an attraction: A whole lot of history, inspirational stories, a Vancouver 2010 exhibit, an Indigenous Sport Gallery, behind the scenes tours, and plenty of hands-on activities. New this season, they have launched It Takes a Village, a special exhibit honouring the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Vancouver Whitecaps Soccer Bowl championship.

It Takes a Village Whitecaps Exhibit

It Takes A Village honours the 1979 Whitecaps squad that won the North American Soccer League title, and in doing so, captured the hearts and imagination of people across British Columbia.

The exhibit includes rare 1979 season artifacts, photos, archival film footage, and interactives on the greatest season in Whitecaps history – and is appropriately named, in recognition of sportscaster Jim McKay’s observation during the Whitecaps playoff run in 1979 that, “Vancouver must be like a deserted village right now.”

Win a Prize Pack

If you would like to check this out for yourself, I have a pair of admission tickets to give away. PLUS, the Whitecaps have included a two VWFC bucket/sun hats and an autographed scarf. Here’s how you can enter to win:
