Juneteenth Vancouver March
Where: Jack Poole Plaza/Olympic Cauldron (moving down Thurlow to Pacific, and Sunset Beach)
When: Friday, June 19, 2020 at 4:00pm
June 19 marks “Juneteenth” – also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day – an annual holiday that commenced in 1865. Following the two recent Black Lives Matters protests, one at šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the other at the Olympic Cauldron, many members of the community have advocated for a march in unity; it is not only emotionally expressive but holds immense power, history and tradition, and is a powerful tool to create change and express community values.
From the organizers: “Though Canadian, we cannot ignore the direct ties that many of our citizens have with our neighbouring Americans below; this makes the celebration of Juneteenth just as important for us as it is for them.”
Ways to Help
- Black Lives Matters t-shirts (pressed by North Vancouver’s Get Bold) will be handed out by volunteers at the march with the purpose to keep sparking conversations once people head home to their own communities, circles and families. Click here to donate before June 15th ($100 for a block of 12 shirts)

“We invite the public to join in and support. Changes’ ripple effects can vary from a city, to a nation, to the world. Voices are to be heard, freedom of speech is to be expressed as we stand in solidarity. The time to stand together is now.”
Following the march, a stage will be set up at Sunset Beach Park where Black artists and speakers will be performing and addressing the crowd. Black-owned businesses will also be at the site to showcase local Black culture, soul food and more.
Those wishing to participate in the march are also reminded to take COVID-19 precautions and to wear masks, and monitor for possible symptoms in the two weeks after the march.

Kitsilano Showboat History
In 1935, the Kitsilano Showboat was founded by Bert Emery. That same year the new Kitsilano Chamber of Commerce organized its first evening of events which included swimming, diving, acrobatics and other entertainment. As the Showboat began during the depression, performers also benefitted as they were not able to secure jobs during those hard times. Made up completely from volunteers, the Showboat has provided free entertainment for 85 years. The iconic outdoor stage, built in 1954, represents a Mississippi River showboat.

Afro Van Connect has announced the Black Spaces Symposium Virtual happening July 23 to July 26, 2020. This Symposium will consist of various panel discussions, art exhibitions and music performances all centred and designed to showcase the black experience.
Black Spaces Symposium Virtual
Purchase tickets online here
This Symposium is established to create opportunities for youth of African Descent to access equipment, education, training, networks and opportunities, empowering them to creatively and economically flourish; building on their unique gifts and perspective from their heritage and diaspora cultural experiences.
Black Spaces
Afro Van Connect has put together this FAQ:
What is Black Space? A Black Space is an intentionally curated and designed space for people of African Descent and their allies to collaborate, commune and create practical solutions to end racism and systemic inequalities.
Why are they important? Black Spaces give people of African Descent the space and agency to reimagine who they are, who they want to be and what impact they want to have within their local communities and the world.
Why the Black Spaces Symposium? The Black Spaces Symposium is about being and belonging. Within British Columbia there are no cultural hubs, community infrastructure, or neighbourhoods that directly serve the specific needs of people of African Descent. The intention of the Black Spaces symposium is to create the awareness of the necessity of black spaces, highlight the various resources within our community, and develop practical solutions to alleviate our inequities.
How can you support black spaces? The lack of safe spaces for people of African Descent to authentically express themselves, their issues and experiences need to be addressed before we can begin to build a strong thriving community. Solving this problem requires all people who see the necessity for change and diversity in our city to come together and actively take part.
Volunteer, Sponsor, Invest
The Symposium is currently seeking volunteers, sponsors and investors who are interested in assisting in ensuring that people of African Descent have the visibility, resources, and the space they need to succeed. Contact [email protected] if you would like to support the Symposium.
For more information, follow Afro Van Connect on Facebook and RSVP to the event on Facebook for updates.
