Happy Birthday Keira

Comments 4 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Today is my friend Keira‘s birthday. She’s another year older, another year wiser, another year prettier (to make up for the older comment), and another year full of friendship, respect, and kindness.

Keira is one of the few people I can trust to listen without judgment if I need to pour out my soul, and she’s also a very good influence when it comes to skipping dinner and eating ice cream instead. She also knows that she can rely on me in the very same way. Although we didn’t meet through blogging at all, we’ve had many good times this year so I’ll display some fond memories below, in true Keira-Anne / Rebecca blog photo style. Vancouver History: City Reflections Screening

Comments 2 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Over 101 years later and the earliest movie footage of Vancouver is still making the rounds. Now available on DVD, City Reflections 1907 – 2007 will also be screened December 12th at the Vancouver Public Library.

Time: 7:00pm to 9:00pm
Where: Alice Mackay Room, Lower Level (Central Library Branch, 350 W Georgia)

“The film is the earliest footage of Vancouver and was shot with a hand-crank camera mounted on the front of a B.C. Electric Railway streetcar by William Harbeck of Seattle.” [Miss604]

This is a free event and is bound to be full of interesting tidbits about Vancouver’s history as a city, as well discussions about how transportation has evolved around here.

Sox in the City 2008

Prevention of infection, discomfort, abscesses and lesions on one’s feet is often as simple as having a good clean pair of socks.

Today marks the kick off of Vancouver’s annual Sox in the City campaign where people are asked to donate new and clean socks for distribution in the Downtown Eastside and other neighbourhoods. [Vancouver Courier]

I’m pretty sure socks of all shapes, sizes and styles are welcome although nothing beats a nice dry wool pair when your shoes (if you have them) are soaked right through.

SoxBox donation bins can be found at the following locations (click location name for a Google map).

Health Contact Centre, Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre, Three Bridges Community Health Centre, Evergreen Community Health Centre, Ravensong Community Health Centre, Vancouver City Hall, Vancouver General Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital, Richmond Hospital.

I’d like to congratulate Kitsilano.ca for making the cut for Best Local Blog and encourage everyone to check them out.

They’re as local as you can get while providing news and tons of restaurant reviews. It’s also run by our pal Rob Lewis (also of super mega tech site, Techvibes) and they use my friend Duane’s photo as a header image.

Kitsilano.ca is up against powerhouse blogs like Windsor Eats so if you’d like to see Vancouver represented, consider casting your ballot for this West coast contender. The voting for the Canadian Blog Awards will wrap up December 7th.

Comments 5 by Rebecca Bollwitt

In case you needed another ballot to fill out this season, I have been nominated as one of Canada’s most influential women in social media.

We’ll announce the Top 3 winners shortly after that based on a combination of the following:
* PostRank’s Engagement analysis tool, PostRank will run a report based on each entrant’s engagement. A score of 0 – 3 will be assigned.
* Community Votes – There 31 women influence you in some way, shape of form, so it only makes sense that you get to vote. A score of 0 – 3 will be assigned.
* Involvement Ranking – Points will be awarded to individuals who helped educate the market place through hosting events on/ around the area of social media and speaking at event on/ around the area of social media. A score of 0 – 4 will be assigned.

It’s an honor to be among the likes of Kate, Monica, and Amber – all of whom I’ve had the pleasure to meet and partake in geeky activities with.

Voting ends December 20th and is only a part of the formula they will use to calculate the best of this country’s women on the web. It’s an uber cliché but it is an honor to be nominated.
