The Hour Filming in Vancouver This May

Comments 6 by Rebecca Bollwitt

This morning it was announced that CBC’s The Hour (with host George Stroumboulopoulos) will be coming to Vancouver to do two shows May 18th and 19th.

Strombo & MeThe show is filmed before a live studio audience so that means they need some Vancouverites to come fill the seats.

You can sign up for free tickets through The Hour’s website and there are some guidelines to go over before you throw your hat in the ring. They also receive hundreds of ticket requests so please only submit your information once. Those selected will be notified by email.

The guest list is currently unknown but it should be a neat experience regardless. I’ve had the chance to chat with George a few times and it’s always a pleasure.

The CBC Vancouver Broadcast Centre is located at 700 Hamilton Street.

Update The guests on for the Vancouver shows have been announced. On Tuesday May 18th guests are Betty Fox (Terry Fox’s mother) and District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp. On Thursday guests are Heritage Minister James Moore & Activist Rick Hansen.

There has been a third Vancouver show added with guests Julio Montaner (President of the International AIDS Society), Our Lady Peace’s Raine Maida, actress Nancy Robertson (Corner Gas, Hiccups), & musical performance by Billy the Kid.

Updated Guest List For the May 19th show Heritage Minister James Moore will be a guest along with Raine Maida and *just announced* the Sedin Twins of the Vancouver Canucks.

Update May 19th, 2010 It’s official, Vancouver loves The Hour. The lineup outside was long, the studio audience had an overflow space, and the crowd hung on every word. The Betty Fox interview was amazing and I’m sure there were only a few dry eyes in the house.

George stuck around after the show to meet and greet fans for well over an hour. Each person got to chat, get a photo, and just hang out – it was great to see that interaction. I know my mom was pretty darn excited to meet him too. We waited until everyone cleared out to get a few special shots and do a quick/fun/fluffy interview.

If you don’t have tickets for tonight’s show just head to the CBC anyway and line up for Rush Tickets. They’ll pop you in the overflow room if there’s capacity.

Delhi 2 Dublin Album Release Concert

Delhi 2 Dublin will be playing the fabulous Commodore Ballroom May 7th as they celebrate the launch of their new album, Planet Electric.

I first heard the Bhangra / Celtic sound of Delhi 2 Dublin when strolling down Granville during Juno Fest 2009. The distinct pulsating melodies mixed with Dub Reggae and Electronica caught everyone’s attention as the tent hosting the group had the crowd spilling out from the street and onto the sidewalk.

Since that time my friend Keira has become a big fan and already has her copy of the new album. She describes it as: “Slickly produced with a seamless flow, Delhi 2 Dublin’s latest effort is solid evidence that they’ve mastered their art of East-to-West fusion.”

Tickets for the Commodore show May 7th at 8:00pm are $19.50 and available through Live Nation. It just so happens that I have two tickets to give away as well as a copy of Planet Electric. If you would like to attend the show & win the CD please leave a comment on this post or tweet the following on Twitter:

Band members are Tarun Nayar, Sanjay Seran, Kytami, Andrew Kim and Ravi Binning. A quote from their website reads, “Audiences love to see a band transcending stereotypes and letting the music speak for itself.”

They’ve been on tour for a few weeks now and from Vancouver will head out on the road straight through August hitting events such as the Joshua Tree Festival in California, the Harrison Hot Springs Festival, the Shambhala Festival in Nelson, and the Ottawa Folk Festival.

I’ll draw the contest winner at 4:00pm Tuesday May 4th.

Update The winner is Tracy Bains (Twitter entry), congratulations!

Update May 7th, 2010 Last night’s performance was amazing and the band was visibly humbled by the experience. Delhi 2 Dublin fulfilled a “lifelong dream,” by playing the Commodore Ballroom said front man Sanjay and you could tell they were just as excited as the sold-out crowd.

The audience threw up their hands and pogo’ed up and down while chanting for D2D as their unique fusion sound pulsated throughout the Commodore. Sitar music blended with wicked violin as kilts and saris twirled on stage. Beats made the crowd bounce as the energy on stage was contagious — everyone was having a blast.

Delhi 2 Dublin’s new album is available this month and you can catch them this weekend with shows in Victoria and Nanaimo.

You can view more photos in Keira’s set on Flickr.

    Dine Out Vancouver: Glowbal Grill

    Comments 9 by Rebecca Bollwitt

This evening I had some friends in from out of town, one of which had never been to Vancouver before. When it came to selecting a spot for dinner I thought of Glowbal after meeting their social media guy (who runs @Glowbal_Group) at the Twestival event in March. We’re also right in the middle of Dine Out Vancouver, which made my menu selection a piece of cake.

Glowbal Grill - Dine Out Vancouver

I went with their $38 prix fixe Dine Out Vancouver menu that started with a roasted Beet and arugula salad topped with whipped garlic boursin cheese and sherry vinaigrette. Continue reading this post ⟩⟩

Lions Gate Lions Show Canucks Pride

    Comments 3 by Rebecca Bollwitt

The lions that guard the entrance to the Lions Gate Bridge (on the Stanley Park side) have been known recently to show their support and team pride.

They sported red mittens during the Olympics and now they’ve traded the red for blue.

A few days ago images surfaced of the lions wearing Canucks jerseys. This morning I noticed that Susan Gittins posted a photo of a Stanley Cup replica placed between one of the lion’s paws (below). In past years, the Cup has been spotted placed in Sir Stanley’s hands at the entrance of the park itself.

However, having asked earlier this week if it was bad luck to hug the Cup, I’m wondering just how these acts may be received. Do you think it’s bad luck to place the Stanley Cup around town, or even carry a replica into games?

Regardless, it seems like the entire city is ready for a parade down Georgia Street. Round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs kick off Saturday when the Canucks take on the Chicago Blackhawks.
