Watch uplifting stories of hope, courage, and resilience, and a whole lot of entertainment as the 57th annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon takes to Global BC this week. This year’s entertainment line-up will feature Sarah McLachlanJim Cuddy and Devin Cuddy & Sam Polley as well as Fefe Dobson and Coquitlam’s own Tyler Shaw.

Look for stories and updates from Variety – the Children’s Charity on Global News Hour at 6 starting Thursday, February 23. The inspiration will continue on all of Global BC’s newscasts including Global News Morning and Global News at Noon on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25.

The weekend will then culminate with the 57th Annual Variety Show of Hearts Telethon airing on Global BC and via livestream at GlobalNews.ca on Sunday, February 26 from 1:00pm to 5:30pm. 

The iconic fundraising event will be hosted by Global BC’s Chris GailusSophie LuiSonia SungerPaul HaysomMark Madryga & Michael Newman, CFOX’s Karen Khunkhun and Rock 101’s Kiah Tucker along with Todd Talbot. Joining them will be Alvin LawMarco PasquaHoward Blank & Jessica McCready together with Variety Youth Champions, Esabella StricklandKaitlyn Lye and Jayden & Ashton.

Throughout all four days, there will be donation matching opportunities up to $850,000 taking the impact of every gift further. Viewers will also meet more children whose lives have been transformed including 6-year-old Kean from Chilliwack who was provided with a pulse oximeter to keep him safe during his asthma attacks and viral-induced illnesses.

There will also be a tribute to Show of Hearts legend Bob McGrath (Sesame Street), an intro to the new Variety Schools program, the popular Robert Bateman poster for those who donate a minimum of $169, and much more to look forward to during the show.

Donations can be made online, over the phone by calling 310-KIDS or by texting “KIDS” to 45678 to make an automatic $25 donation.

Bonus! Beginning on February 26th through to March 5th, $2 from every burger sold at all White Spot restaurants and R+D Kitchen by White Spot located at the Amazing Brentwood will be donated to Variety up to $100,000.

Foodstock 2023

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank (“GVFB”) has announced the return of Foodstock, a food bank fundraising festival that will take place June 18, 2023 at Swangard Stadium. Foodstock 2023 will be headlined by Said The Whale with more bands to be announced in mid-March.

  • When: Sunday, June 18, 2023 12:00pm to 5:00pm
  • Where: Swangard Stadium (6100 Boundary Road, Burnaby)
  • Tickets: On sale now for $30 each (plus fees and taxes) and include one standard sized beverage (12oz beer and mixed liquor, 5 oz wine).
    • Foodstock is a 19+ event. All guests must show proof of age before being granted access to the grounds.

Food and beverages will feature a delicious roster of local vendors, including Dageraad, Luppolo Brewing and Pacific Breeze Winery.

50% off all beverage sales and 10% of all food and marketplace sales for the event will be donated to the GVFB.

The 2nd annual event aims to raise some much-needed funds to help feed those in the community facing food insecurity. The GVFB provides assistance to over 15,000  people each month through direct distribution in Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore.  28% of their clients are children, and 15% are seniors. The GVFB also provides food support to 141 community agencies throughout these communities, such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition houses and after-school programs, which in turn provide meals and snacks to thousands of people each week.

CelticFest Vancouver Free All-Ages Festival

CelticFest Vancouver, the city’s annual celebration of Celtic culture, will host a week-long series of celebrations with music, comedy and entertainment March 11-18, 2023. The signature event is a free all-ages festival happening the weekend of March 17-18 in Downtown Vancouver.

CelticFest Vancouver Free All-Ages Festival

  • Where: šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square – North of the Vancouver Art Gallery

Kicking off on Saint Patrick’s Day, the weekend’s festivities include live music, performances, a beer tent, food trucks, Irish dancing, a Celtic-themed market, Irish Wolfhounds, a family zone, sports demonstrations and more. 

The festival will showcase a range of performances including music from local Celtic favourites The Whiskeydicks and Fight Outside featuring Brian O’Brien and Paul Caldwell. Lavengro, a pop-indie band from Derry, Ireland will be in Vancouver to perform in addition to rising singer/songwriter Shane Beirne from Carrick on Shannon in Roscommon, Ireland. 

Throughout the weekend across two stages at the Vancouver Art Gallery, acts like Jas Minh, the Irish Dancing Drag Queen will entertain audiences and Eire Born Irish Dancers will perform traditional dance.

Family favourite, Music with Marnie will delight young festival-goers while the family zone has games and activities for all ages. A curated marketplace will offer everything from baked goodies, O’Neills sportswear, a photo booth from sponsor Swim Recruiting, locally made crafts and games with community groups from the Irish and Scottish communities.

The Vancouver Heritage Foundation presents Vancouver Heritage Week February 20-26, 2023, celebrating the theme “Always in All Ways”, which invites you to explore your community’s heritage in all the ways that excite you.
