This time of year is supposedly the most depressing but with the Cupcake Throwdown, Hot Chocolate Festival, Dine Out Vancouver and the Bite of White Rock, all the goodness going into our bellies is sure to cheer us up. An even better way to get rid of the winer blues is to attend a fabulous event like Liberty Wine Merchants’ Taste BC that supports the BC Children’s Hospital Oak Tree Clinic.

Sip and sample some of the province’s best wine and beer, along with canapés prepared by the city’s best restaurants. The event includes live music, door prizes, a silent auction and more.

Athletics for Kids Gala 2012

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

Athletics for Kids will be hosting their 10th annual fundraising gala March 30, 2012 with a Vegas Night theme.

Established in 2002, Athletics for Kids (“A4K”) provides financially disadvantaged youth in the community with greater access to organized sport in conjunction with their academic endeavours. “A4K’s overarching goal is to be there to assist any B.C. child in their dream of playing amateur sports. In other words, we want all kids to have the opportunity to play.”

The organization is a privately funded charity who helps families bear the expense of having their children participate in organized sports. The support of A4K is available province-wide for children ages 5 to 18 who are currently enrolled in school.

In the past, the Athletics for Kids annual gala has funded 1,500 sporting activities for children and youth who otherwise would have been left watching from the sidelines.

Individual tickets for Vegas Night are available now for $175 (or 10 for $1,500) and the evening will include a complimentary cocktail reception with gaming stations for guests to try their luck, a gourmet three course dinner with complimentary wine served at every table, an extravagant silent and live auctions, live amateur boxing featuring talented athletes from local boxing clubs, prizes and a WestJet dream giveaway. The gala takes place at Hollyburn Country Club from 6:00pm to 11:00pm on March 30th.

Follow Athletics for Kids on Facebook and Twitter for more information.

Update TEAM1040’s Barry MacDonald will be the emcee of Vegas Night and Mark Donnelly, from Vancouver Canucks fame, will be singing “O Canada” in the centre ring.

There are also fabulous live auction prizes available including:

  • Vancouver Canucks Playoff Tickets, Coast Hotel Stay and Autographed Team Jersey
  • A Weekend Harley Davidson Getaway
  • VIP Tickets to Dancing with the Stars in LA
  • Dinner for 10 by Hollyburn Executive Chef, Jerry Fyfe

Tickets are still available if you’re able to attend the Vegas Night Gala in support of Athletics for Kids!

Snow Tubing Classic for a Cause

Comments 6 by Rebecca Bollwitt

There are some very creative ways to support a cause and flying down a snowy slope on a rubber doughnut filled with air sounds pretty fantastic. A Little More Good, a local company that supports and promotes the ‘small’ actions that you can take to make a difference, has dreamed up the Snow Tubing Classic.

Taking place January 26, 2012 at Mount Seymour, the event will support A Little More Good’s “Charity of the Month” which is the Take a Hike Foundation.

The ultimate goal of the Take a Hike alternative education program is that barriers to learning are minimized, personal issues are addressed, and students achieve a greater level of social and academic success. Programs combine the following four aspects: adventure-based learning, therapy, academics, and community involvement.

The Snow Tubing Classic will begin at 7:00pm on January 26th and tickets are $20 in advance or $30 at the hill. The only people on the hill at that time will be event participants and all net proceeds go directly to the Take A Hike Foundation.

Related: If you’d like to snowshoe for a cause, sign up for the Take a Hike Foundation Moonlight Snowshoe. Collect pledges/donations for Take a Hike Foundation, which supports at-risk youth in our community, and have a great time in the snow.
