Happening at the Lynn Valley Library (1277 Lynn Valley Rd) February 24 to 26, 2012, you can stop by between 10:00am and 7:00pm on Friday, on Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, and on Sunday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
Children’s items usually sell out quickly on Friday and on Sunday everything is half price. You can fill a bag with books for $3 or a box for $5.
Proceed from the sale will provide book prizes for the Summer Reading Club, The Trick is to Read Halloween program, as well as the Excite Your Library Experience campaign to create an improved lobby lounge at Lynn Valley Library. The University Women’s Club will be hosting the Hycroft Antiques Appraisal Clinic in March, which is loosely based on the popular television series Antiques Roadshow.
Antiques Roadshow was the original program that helped the everyday person get their household items, heirlooms, or collectibles appraised by a professional, on television. Now in it’s 14th season, with over 10 million viewers each week, I can’t help but think it inspired recent pop culture phenomenons like American Pickers, Pawn Starts, and even Storage Wars.
If you have an item you would like to get appraised you can register now for the Hycroft Antiques Appraisal Clinic that will take place March 5th and March 6th from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Call (604) 731-4661 or email uwcv[at]uwcvancouver.ca to book your appointment.
Local art and antique experts Anthony Westbridge and Peter Blundell will take on the task of doing verbal appraisals including the age, history, and value of items. Admission is $35 for University Women’s Club members and $40 for guests. Antiques, collectibles, and art are perfect for this event, but please do not bring guns, stamps, coins, furniture or jewelry.
The Rize development in Mount Pleasant has committed to providing space for the community, local retailers, and showcasing area artists. Throughout the months of January and February 2012, they are hosting an exhibit called 5 that will showcase the works of Linda Suffidy, Emmanuel Buenviaje, Thibault Sendra, Salvador Nunez, and Raven Sto.
On now until February 11th, you can stop by to check out the photography of Emmanuel Buenviaje Emmanuel focused, fittingly, on the Mount Pleasant area for this exhibit. “I wanted to push and explore the practice of photo documentary towards a personal visual language. With a graphic design background, I rely on sound design principles where colour, composition and play become one.”
It’s free to visit the 5 exhibit which is open Tuesday to Saturdays from 11:00am to 5:00pm at 196 Kingsway at East 10th.
It’s been four years since I met up with Matt Layzell of The Matinée at Roxy Burger to interview him for my E!Online column. The six folk/southern/roots band members (Matt Layzell, Matt Rose, Pete Lemon, Mike Young, Geoff Petrie, and Dave Young) had only been together for a year but their future looked promising.
Since that fateful night, The Matinée released a self-titled EP, have done a Canada-wide tour, released a full studio album, were featured in Shore 104FM‘s Sounds of Summer contest, and recently placed third in The Peak Performance Project.
Their top-tapping music is real and approachable and their energetic live shows have earned them quite the following. You can catch them January 30th at The Yard Cafe for an acoustic set, at VENUE February 18th, in Whistler at the GLC on February 25th, during CelticFest Vancouver March 15th, and in Toronto for Canadian Music Week March 22nd to 25th.

Already recognized in Canada and the United States, the City of Vancouver has also officially declared February as Black History Month. Last year I touched on Vancouver’s Black history by doing up a small profile on East Vancouver’s Hogan’s Alley, but there is a much greater story to be told and celebrated.

Although often overlooked, there’s a rich tapestry of Black history going back to the early colonial origins of Canada.
In 1858, nearly 800 free Black people left the oppressive racial conditions of San Francisco for a new life on Vancouver Island. Governor James Douglas had invited them to settle in British Columbia. Though still faced with intense discrimination, these pioneers enriched the political, religious and economic life of the colony.
Unknown to many, Douglas was himself the product of a mixed marriage — his father was Scottish and his mother Guyanese. Douglas strove to be known as Caucasian; however, he quickly agreed to the appeal from the San Francisco delegation. In turn, the Black pioneers pledged their support to Douglas and to the cause of British sovereignty.
Many from that initial group have contributed notably to BC life: Mifflin Gibbs became a prominent politician; Charles and Nancy Alexander initiated the Shady Creek Methodist Church; and John Deas established a salmon cannery. The group also formed one of the earliest colonial militia units, the Victoria Pioneer Rifle Corps. A ceremony took place on February 20, 2000, in Saanichton, BC to honour the original arrival of Black pioneers in British Columbia. [City of Vancouver]
Vancouverites like Harry Jerome, Emery Barnes, and Dr Rosemary Brown were pioneers in their fields, and the legendary Joe Fortes was named Vancouver’s “Citizen of the Century”.
