Vancouver’s summer Fair at the PNE kicks off this weekend with entertainment, exhibitions, demonstrations, and food creations that go far beyond the beloved mini donuts. The team from FortisBC (natural gas, electricity, and energy solutions) is returning this year with an info booth about how you can save energy in your home throughout the year.

Honda CRV Whistler Roadtrip

Recently, Honda invited me to go on a roadtrip with some other local bloggers in the new CRV. We gathered at their headquarters in Richmond early on a Saturday morning. Once divided into teams (I was paired with Gwen from LeftCoastMama.net), we set about loading up our CRV with some typical things you’d take on a weekend getaway… and we crammed it pretty full:

Shannon Falls

Unfortunately, it was raining as we departed Richmond and made our way through downtown and onto the Sea to Sky highway.

We made a quick stop at Shannon Falls…a place I haven’t actually stopped at in years. There was a large amount of people there that didn’t seem to mind the light rain.

After a brief stop in Squamish for lunch at the Cup Cafe/Bistro, we then switched drivers for the last part of our trip to Whistler.

Upon arriving in Whistler at the Fairmont, the group split up and either hit the Spa or the Peak to Peak. Fortunately, the weather had cleared up and it got nice and warm for the afternoon.

The group then reassembled and headed to Rainbow Park in the Whistler Valley for the Araxi Long Table dinner series:

Araxi Long Table Dinner

Seeing that enormous row of tables in the meadow was pretty stunning. We were all a little concerned about the weather but the folks at Araxi had a Plan B (popup tents for the tables) that fortunately went unused.

We were then treated to a four course meal that was simply amazing… easily one of my top ten favorite meal experiences ever.

After an amazing dinner, we headed back to the hotel. A nice soak in the hot tub capped off a great (albeit long) day.

Aaahhhh... #GoHondaCRV

Sunday morning came too quickly and we loaded up the vehicle again and headed back down from Whistler.

2013 Honda CRV

One of the many things I enjoyed about the CRV was all the new technology that it has. Like the new voice command system that makes it very easy to say something like “Radio, 100.5” and then the stereo switches to The Peak without taking your eyes off the road. You can also use your voice to control your phone, the navigation system and other parts of the car.

Honda CRV

I also really liked the custom wallpaper option on the upper clock screen too. Such a little thing goes a long way to me, especially as cars get more sophisticated displays inside, it makes sense that you can personalize it with a few different photos.

We enjoyed a brief getaway but we were able to cram in plenty of activities, leaving the city behind and making a quick escape (in style, with the CRV).

Music Therapy Ride 2012

Comments 1 by Rebecca Bollwitt

The 11th annual Music Therapy Ride (“MTR”) is rolling out to Harrison Hot Springs in September. Founded by members of the music industry (from artists to label representatives, agents, managers, and promoters) all motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to participate in the event that supports community-based music therapy services throughout British Columbia.

Now celebrating it’s 11th anniversary, MTR has raised over $500,000 as a result of its annual ride from Vancouver to Whistler. In 2012, MTR will rev its engines even louder, and provide a presidential escort to a new location, beautiful Harrison Hot Springs. In addition to aiding Music Therapists and general Music Therapy programs, the MTR committee has funded a recording studio at BC Children’s Hospital, as well as manufactured a mobile recording studio to service patients bedside in the hospital. The mobile studios, operating under the name “Band Wagon 1”, enable Music Therapists to expand their already vital work by giving clients the ability to record the music created during their therapy sessions. This music will provide a legacy for their family, friends and community.

Where Meet at Fraser Downs (17755 60 Avenue) in Surrey and ride out to Harrison.

When Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 8:30am for breakfast and registration. Riders head out at 9:30am.

Who Anyone who would like to ride and support the cause. Celebrity guests this year also include Sophie, Nick and Shannon Tweed-Simmons, along with Nick “Mosh” Marshall.

Upon arrival at the Harrison Hot Springs’ Lakeside Café, there will be a barbeque lunch, live auction and special acoustic performance by 54-40.

You can sign up for the ride if you’re a single or double rider or a four-wheeled vehicle. Early bird pricing is $99 and has been extended. Follow the Music Therapy Ride on Twitter or Facebook for more information.

Go World: Team VISA’s Richard Peter

Comments 95 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Visa is currently sponsoring a handful of Canadian Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls (and some who have become champions already) as they have done for the last 26 years. They have partnered with me to showcase members of their team like bronze medal-winners Brent Hayden of Mission and Emilie Heymans, and Paralympic swimmer Benoît Huot. Today’s featured Team VISA athlete is Vancouver’s own Richard Peter.

Peter became a staple of Team Canada since first making the senior national team in 1994. His athletic repertoire includes back-to-back Paralympic gold medals from 2000 and 2004, a Paralympic silver medal from 2008, and a world championship title from 2006. [Wheelchair Basketball Canada]

Richard received a Received National Aboriginal Achievement Award in 2012, was named to the 2004-2006, 2009, 2010 National Championships tournament all-star team, and was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Cheer on Richard and his team during the London 2012 Paralympics August 29th to September 9th, 2012.

VISA Canada has offered up a $250 pre-paid gift card to one lucky Miss604 reader to celebrate Canadians cheering for Canadians. Here’s how how you can enter to win:

  • Leave a comment with words of encouragement for our London 2012 Paralympians (1 entry)
  • Post the following on Twitter (1 entry)
RT to enter to win a $250 pre-paid #VISA #GoWorld gift card from @Miss604 http://ow.ly/cTpty

Continue to cheer on your Canadian athletes through Team VISA on Facebook and by using the tag #GoWorld on Twitter.

Update The winner is Shannon Mac!

Vancouver Waterfight 2012

Comments 2 by Rebecca Bollwitt

The 7th annual Vancouver Waterfight is happening tomorrow near Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park. This now-legendary soaking event is open to all who want to play along and is a “do over” since the original date in July was already too soggy, thanks to the weather.

The waterfight is more of a “friendly soaking” with rules to ensure that no one is hurt during this wet and playful game. Here are a few abbreviated rules as posted on the Facebook Event:

Vancouver Waterfight Code of Conduct

  1. Do not bring any other water “weapons” aside from water pistols. Water balloons are not allowed as they cause litter.
  2. Absolutely do not by any means bring a water pistol that resembles a real gun.
  3. Be sure to dress for the occasion and be prepared to get wet.
  4. Do not terrorize the public. They do not want to take part unless they are receptive to your invitation to join. Only target the other willing and enthusiastic participants.
  5. Do not bring cameras because you know they will get wet and/or damaged. Put your mobile phone in a plastic baggie if you must have it out.
  6. This is a laugh, don’t take it too seriously, and don’t beat each other up over it.
  7. Do not leave a mess behind (again, do not bring water balloons and avoid bringing bottles of water).
  8. No dyed water. Keep it good, clean, fun.
  9. … and more!

Meet up at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 11, 2012 near Lumberman’s Arch and the kid’s water park area. Silliness will ensue for at least 90 minutes and in previous years, it lasted for a good 3-4 hours. There are currently about 200 people who have RSVP’d for this event on Facebook, which is down about 1,200 from previous years, however organizers are expecting between 300 and 500 participants.
