French Made Baking is hosting their annual Macaron Day on Wednesday March 20, 2013 in conjunction with International Macaron Day fundraising events.
Stop by French Made Baking on March 20th and mention Macaron Day to receive a free macaron. In return, they simply ask that you consider making a donation to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation (suggested donation is $2).
Macaron Day was founded in France (le jour du macaron) by Pierre Hermé years ago. It’s a day to celebrate the colours of spring with a bright palette of treats. Macaron Day events will be happening overseas, in New York, and in Toronto.
Macarons (not to be confused with macaroons) are meringue-based confections commonly filled with buttercream or jam with a delicate soft and crunchy outer shell.
French Made will be posting updates about available flavours in the coming days but they are preparing to offer at least 12 different varieties. Follow @FrMadeBaking on Twitter for updates leading up to Macaron Day/Jour du Macaron and check back here as more local bakeries are sure to get on board as they did last year.

I have been contacted by Kitchening & Co. who are also participating in Maracon Day. They’re giving away up to $10,000 worth of macarons to raise money for charities on the downtown eastside. For this campaign, simply pre-order macarons from their website and pick them up on Macaron Day, March 20th.

February showers bring March flowers — well, at least a little bit of early spring sunshine. The Inukshuk at English Bay is the focus of many photographs taken by locals and tourists alike. It stars with sunset views, sweeping inlet panoramas, and sparkling fireworks displays. It was the inspiration for the winning logo design for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics (which wrapped up 3 years ago this week). For this reason and more, it is this week’s Vancouver Icon photo feature:
Originally part of the Northwest Territories Pavilion during Expo 86, the Inukshuk was moved to its location along the English Bay Sea Wall in 1987.

The Spring West Coast Women’s Show opened its doors this afternoon, kicking off a weekend of shopping, entertainment, and wellness at the PNE Forum in Vancouver. Open tonight until 9:00pm, tomorrow from 10:00am to 6:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm, there are over 200 exhibitors and a full main stage lineup of speakers and performers.
It took me about 45 minutes to do a full lap today, winding betweens row and rows of exhibitors, and I was going at a pretty breakneck pace just to get my bearings. Slowing things down, I did a few more laps, taking time to try samples (fudge, salsa, curry, pepperoni, beer, wine, you name it) and talk to some of the booth keepers.
A crowd gathered in front of Beads to Bling to learn about making their own jewellery, HealthLink BC gave me a sticker and a magnet promoting their 8-1-1 nurse on call service, Skinnygrape set up next to the Hall of Flame firefighters, and Stella & Dot had a steady stream of traffic checking out their accessories. Dead Sea Products & Hair Straighteners almost wrangled me in for a product demo but I couldn’t stop as I’m on the job today, fulfilling my duties as the show’s Social Media Sponsor. However I did pause to take a few photos of the adorable display from Western Sage Honey.
Coming up this evening the main stage lights up with Samira–Truly Tina at 6:00pm and the Spring Into Style Fashion Show at 6:30pm following by the Calendar Fightfighters Fashion Show at 7:15pm. It all starts up again tomorrow morning with Truly Tina returning to the stage and Ellen’s DJ Tony Okungbowa taking the spotlight at 2:00pm and staying there throughout the fashion show that follows at 2:30pm. DJ Tony will also stick around for an autograph session at 3:15pm. Come by Sunday to see Joshua Morrow from The Young and the Restless at 1:00pm.
I’m off to check out more of the show before author Chantel Wilson takes the stage but follow along on Twitter @WCWomensShow all weekend long. There are plenty of prizes to be won and draws to be entered on-site as well.
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors ($7 on Friday from 1:00pm to 5:00pm), $8 for youth (13 to 17), $4 for children (6 to 12), and children 5 and under are free. Ticket prices include HST. Tight little rows of ballerina swans in flat feathered tutus moving into different formations, tilting their hips like feathers ruffling, tapping their toes on the floor like feathers fluttering, sometimes in unison, and always purposefully perfect.

This weekend, BC Ballet presents the National Ballet of China’s performance of the 19th century classic Swan Lake, set to the well-known score of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky and after last night’s performance, I urge everyone to grab a ticket for a potentially once in a lifetime experience.
The technical precision executed by the National Ballet of China is almost alien-like as the white swans dance, when Prince Siegfried (Sheng Shidong) leaps and pirouettes multiple times in the air and when Odette (Zhang Jian) bends backward so far, her head almost touches the ceiling again.
Though extremely regimented and precise, the National Ballet of China doesn’t perform a cold, technical rendition of the famous love story–they are able to capture the emotional life of the story of a Prince who falls in love with a princess who has been turned into a swan by a sorcerer.
Zhang Jian’s Odette is heartbreaking and she not only communicates emotions through her graceful and open-hearted movements and facial expressions, but she also conveys them through actual emotion he conjures up–her grief, love, and longing projects to the very back of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and resonates in the space throughout the show, and in my case, with me for the rest of the night.
