Win Tickets to Selah Sue in Vancouver

Comments 16 by Rebecca Bollwitt

Selah Sue, a Belgian musician and songwriter, will be playing VENUE in Vancouver on Tuesday, August 20, 2013. Her debut album Selah Sue was released in Europe in 2011 and it gardnered her a European Border Breakers Award that year. The following year she won another EBBA for People’s Choice. Her album was released in the United States in 2012 and has received much positive press.

Even without romanticising it, her story is like a fairy tale. It’s the story of a young musician who ignores her fate, and pours her anxieties into her songs and her guitar. “I had all these worries and depressions that I wrote down, it was a way of structuring my thoughts”. She turns her doubts into soul, funk and reggae melodies, trying hard to be worthy of her idols, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Bob Marley. She sings in local clubs on the weekend and attends high school during the week. She records in home‐studios, at friends houses, and publishes drafts of her songs on Myspace, without a thought of making a career in music.

Tickets are $15 (+ GST) through Live Nation, by phone 1-855-985-5000, at Red Cat Records, or all Ticketmaster outlets. If you would like to see Selah Sue in person, I have a pair of tickets for the show to give away thanks to Live Nation. Here’s how you can enter to win:

Vancouver Fireworks Photos: Thailand at the Celebration of Light

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

The Honda Celebration of Light fireworks have concluded for another year as the largest crowd of the season (of about 300,000 to 350,000) gathered to see what Thailand had in store for their display on Saturday. Some of the night’s most spectacular moments were captured by talented photographers who have shared their fireworks photos with the Miss604 Flickr Pool:

According to Translink, overall the event was positive from their perspective:

Transit Police Chief, Neil Dubord, would again like to thank transit users on all three nights of the Celebration of Light for their responsible behaviour and positive attitude. “Using transit on these very busy nights can be difficult and try everyone’s patience. You stood up to the test and made the experience more pleasant for everyone. On behalf of all the members of the Transit Police Service, I would like to say thank you.”

Vote for the Celebration of Light Fireworks

Now is the time to vote for your favourite fireworks display this year, put on by either the UK, Canada, or Thailand. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, August 7, 2013.

This is the 35th anniversary of Pride in Vancouver and the parade has become among the largest and most successful events in the world in support of LGBTQ communities.

Vancouver Pride Parade Grand Marshalls

These individuals represent an intergenerational and international perspective on Pride, celebrating the people who have shaped its spirit with their passion for equality:

  • Susan Harman, Karin Lind and Aideen McKenna are three amazing moms from PFLAG who have contributed over a decade of service to the parents, families, and friends of Vancouver’s LGBTQ Community.
  • Brandon Timmerman is an extraordinary Ontario youth who founded Brockville Pride at the age of 16 and has continued to be an advocate for queer youth.
  • Zdravko Cimbaljevic is the “first out gay man” in Montenegro and the founder of its modern LGBTQ movement.

Vancouver Pride Parade Route

The parade begins at Robson Street and Thurlow Street, heads west to Denman Street, follows Denman to Pacific Street and Beach Avenue and finishes at the Sunset Beach Festival site. The Sunset Beach Festival will start at 11:00am (at Beach and Bute) and is free to attend. Over 150,000 partiers make this their home base, enjoying a market, live music, community organizations, and more.

2013 is also the first year that the Vancouver Pride Parade is a Civic Parade, a huge win for the Vancouver Pride Society. This means that the parade has solidified its place as “a cultural institution in Vancouver”, receiving a 345% increase in funding, which will offset city costs such as fire, police, ambulance, and sanitation.

Add a Comment by Rebecca Bollwitt

Vancouver is a city of runners — of all levels — and our sidewalks, Seawall paths, and forest trails are well-traveled. We’re fortunate enough to have a variety of running events offered each season and the next big one is the SeaWheeze Half Marathon along with the Sunset Festival.

SeaWheeze Half Marathon

  • What: A 21.1km half marathon around Downtown Vancouver and Kitsilano.
  • Where: The run starts and finishes near the Olympic Cauldron at West Cordova and Thurlow, outside of the Vancouver Convention Centre.

SeaWheezeRouteMap

SeaWheeze Showcase Store

The SeaWheeze Showcase Store is a 28,000 square foot space full of exclusive SeaWheeze product available only on SeaWheeze weekend. It will be located at the Vancouver Convention Centre on Friday, August 9th (8:00am to 9:00pm) and Saturday, August 10th (8:00am to 1:00pm).

Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival: I SPY with UniverCity

Comments 28 by Rebecca Bollwitt

The Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival is coming up on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Deer Lake Park with top acts such as Blue Rodeo and Charles Bradley (the Screaming Eagle of Soul).

Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival

A soulful mix of quality tunes, a green backdrop at the lake, the ability to bring your own blankets, low-back beach chairs and coolers, all make this one sweet summer festival in the heart of the city. Tickets are currently on sale for $70 (taxes/fees may apply) or $200 for a party park of 4. Single tickets are available at the door as well for $75. Children 12 years and younger are free at the gates with an accompanying adult.

Other performers include Shakura S’Aida, ZZ Ward, Ndidi Onukwulu, David Gogo, Jon and Roy, The Sojourners, John Lee Sanders, Vince Vaccaro, Brickhouse, and Shaun Verreault. Follow the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival on Facebook for more event information.

UniverCity’s I SPY Contest

UniverCity is an impressive new development atop Burnaby Mountain at SFU. I admit I haven’t spent much time at SFU recently and I couldn’t believe the changes throughout the last decade. Condominiums, plazas, beautifully-crafted buildings, grocery shopping, dining options, and my new favourite thing — Yeti Yogurt.

In the 1990s, SFU created its Community Trust to build a community that would generate income for the university from development without damaging the environment. That community became UniverCity, a model for practical and affordable sustainability.

SFU had two primary goals in developing a residential community: to create a more “complete community” on the mountain, with a diverse range of housing choices, shops, services, and amenities; and to establish an Endowment Fund to support teaching and research at SFU. Although the land remains under SFU ownership, fully serviced and subdivided parcels are available to developers through 99-year lease agreements. [Source: UniverCity]

This residential community is at one of the highest points in Burnaby and celebrates all the city has to offer including the showpiece of summer, the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival.

UniverCity is currently hosting I SPY, a contest to win tickets to the festival. To participate, search for UniverCity stickers hidden within the community each week. Once you have found the sticker, claim your tickets at the Trust office (#150-8960 University High Street) during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm).

Visit the Trust office or follow along on Facebook and Twitter (SFU Community Trust) for clues on the ticket whereabouts. A total of 8 (4 pairs) tickets are up for grabs. Participants are eligible to win a maximum of one pair (2) tickets. The I SPY contest runs until August 9th, 2013.

My Contest

To promote the I SPY contest, UniverCity has offered up a pair of tickets to one lucky Miss604 reader as well. Here’s how you can enter to win your way into the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival on August 10th:

  • Leave a comment on this post (1 entry)
  • Post the following on Twitter (1 entry)

I will draw one winner at random from all entries at 12:00pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. The winner’s tickets will be available for pick-up at the UniverCity Trust office. Update The winner is: Judy Cupskey!
