Vancouver Farmers Markets is celebrating its 20th birthday this Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at Main Street Station Market with an official “Vancouver Farmers Markets Day” proclamation from the City. This non-profit society organized the city’s first open air farmers market on July 29, 1995.
Deputy Mayor Andrea Reimer will be on hand to present the plaque and read the proclamation to market organizers, vendors and shoppers at 3:30pm. Other 20th birthday festivities at the market on Wednesday include free coffee and donuts for shoppers, compliments of Cartems Donuterie and Salt Spring Coffee.

Looking out across English Bay the horizone is spotted with kayaks, sailboats, cruise ships and tankers. This has been the view, albeit with very different vessels, throughout most of Vancouver’s history. Thanks to the City of Vancouver Archives, along with photographers today who share their works online, we can see “then and now” views of our landscapes over 100 years apart.

The Honda Celebration of Light kicked off its 25th season last night with China up first in the world’s largest offshore fireworks competition. Vancouver PD estimates 250,000-260,000 people packed Vancouver beaches last night to take in the show that was preceded by an aerial display by stunt pilot “Super” Dave Mathieson.

Coming up on Wednesday, July 29th, Team Brazil will light up the skies at 10:00pm and the Canadian Armed Forces “Skyhawks” will put on the airshow at 8:00pm. On Saturday, August 1st, Team Canada will be up at 10:00pm along with “Skydancer” Anna Serbinenko at 8:00pm. There was only 11mm of rain recorded in June where the monthly normal is 54mm here in Raincouver. We’ve had extreme drought conditions but this morning, waking up to the pitter patter of rain drops outside our windows, Vancouverites have been (mostly) rejoicing.

Unfortunately this rain won’t be enough to top up our reservoirs, that have been reported at 69% of their usual levels, and we still have Stage 3 Watering Restrictions. However, it will nourish thirsty gardens, wash away some grime from our sidewalks and alleys, and invigorate our Wet Coast souls before another warm spell sets in to dry up our summer once more.
