80s Music Hour

Comments 8 by Rebecca Bollwitt

On my way out of the Talk 1410am studios yesterday (where I do my weekly segment with Pat and Val) I bumped into Gino Vanelli. This inspired me to look up some of his sweet tunes on YouTube, which lead to a total 80s music fest tonight at casa di Bollwitt.

Gino Vanelli – Black Cars

Mr. Mister – Take These Broken Wings

We watched Real Genius at Keira’s the other night and the film ends with this song playing.

Midnight Oil – Because I remember Stu Jeffries playing it on Video Hits

Because Tears for Fears is so awesome

That’s very cool! I hope you managed to get a photo with him. I have a personal policy of carrying a camera with me everywhere I go. Great photo aren’t made …they happen. Well the best ones are anyways…

That is very cool. Was he easily recognizable? And thx for all the 80’s tunes – brings back so many memories 🙂

@ Justin – Nope, no photos, I was just on my way out and they held the door for me.

@ Phaedra – The tan-coloured cowboy boots and the limo pulling away from the curb gave him away, although I did have to look up his other tunes via a YouTube search. The tunes all came back to me right away but John had never heard any of them, that’s when I realized it was probably because he was a Canadian recording artist… them Americans weren’t exposed 😛

Speaking of Tears for Fears, it must be said that their first album The Hurting was one of the first record I’d ever owned. This was before they really hit it big with the songs above. I played it until I knew every note of it, and until the vinyl sounded so crackily it was nearly unlistenable. That record was like a precious thing, and where I’m not sure I owe Tears for Fears alone for my current state of music geekery (The Beatles were the real kick start…) , it certainly set me on the path of finding and acquiring piles and piles of records that I love.

    Cheers for the clips!

As an ’80s teenager, Midnight Oil remains one of my two favourite bands (the other being Crowded House). Well, and the Beatles of course, but now they’re my daughter’s favourite (she’s ten), so I’ll stick with the two Down Under outfits.

But “Take These Broken Wings” is way up near the top of my list of Most. Hated. Songs. Evar. Maybe at the top, in fact.
