Vancouveropoly
byYesterday it was announced that a new Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition will be released by Hasbro and it will feature three Canadian cities.
Montreal will occupy the dark blue property traditionally owned by Boardwalk, the most expensive one on the game board.
Toronto will occupy the magenta property traditionally owned by Virginia Avenue and Vancouver will occupy the orange property traditionally owned by New York Avenue. [CBC]
When I was young my brother had Vancouveropoly, an entire version of the boardgame dedicated to the city. We’d head to the Sun Yat Sen gardens and visit Monk McQueens – all without leaving Whalley.
Looking up some images online I came across another version of Vancouveropoly. The abundance of flatlands around False Creek along with a lack of Science World suggests it was pre-1986 (and not 1993 as noted on the source website). However, the Molson Indy Vancouver did start in 1990 and I do see some hot cars in its location. Regardless, I don’t think they were going for accuracy in the depictions – unless the Burnaby Village Museum is “still” located somewhere on the downtown peninsula.
In this classic version of Vancouver Richards on Richards is in the prestigious Park Place spot, the BCTV news hour reigns supreme, Dueck on Marine takes up two spots, Save on Foods exists without Urban Fare, and the Big Bam Boo is the hottest club in town.
We enjoyed passing McDonalds time and time again, but I have to admit that our favourite game of buying and selling assets has always been Poleconomy: Canada. Regardless, I would still be interested in seeing what an updated version of this game would look like.

I had the Vancouveropoly when I was a kid too. I’d completely forgotten about it. Way to bring back Childhood memories Rebecca!
I totally missed out on Vancouveropoly growing up. The North Shore seems under-represented. Maybe we didn’t play in protest of that?

I guess if they had Vancouveropoly today Scott Road and King George would occupy the first to streets. Ha ha ha.
Awww…it warms my heart to see the old BCTV logo. Global BC pales in comparison to the days when Tony and Pamela ruled the streets of this city.
Uhg! I lived a short cocktail glass throw from Big Bam Boo for years…… Gotta tell you, I hated that place around 3am when the drunk stumblers would “yahoo” by my window….. Ahhh… Vancouver back in the day….
Poleconomy was good, but I always prefered “Power Play”. Still have the original game with Canucks logo on the box, and Kurt Oranenbach’s (sp) smiling face.

I have a different Vancouver version of Monopoly from the latter part of the 1990s that I was given when I worked in marketing at the head office of Duthie Books. The manufacturer needed our permission to include us as a space on the board and I got a sample as a thank you. I still have it somewhere in storage. The tokens include a hiking boot, an umbrella, and a totem pole, but no bongs or mountain bikes. 😉
