Megaphone Magazine Spring Campaign

by Rebecca Bollwitt

Megaphone Magazine, based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, amplifies marginalized voices and creates meaningful work for those experiencing poverty. This spring you can help them raise funds to continue to invest in the community.

Megaphone Magazine Spring Campaign

Megaphone provides an outlet for local journalism and photography from their peer newsroom, along with art and poetry, all powered by their vendors.

The publications, the means by which they are created and sold, foster community engagement, awareness, and support for people experiencing poverty and social isolation. Every day, Megaphone vendors contribute to their organization, not just by selling products, but by sharing their stories, shaping programs and publications, guiding governance, and strengthening the community that makes Megaphone what it is.

Megaphone’s Spring Campaign is about protecting and expanding those opportunities—so that people experiencing poverty and marginalization have the tools, support and platform to create whatever they want to create, whether it’s investigative journalism, fiction, photography or something entirely their own.

When you give, you’re not just supporting vendor sales or lived experience journalism. You’re helping make creativity possible for everyone.

  • $75 — keeps their creative writing workshops stocked with snacks and refreshments, so folks can settle in and focus on creating;
  • $125 — equips their monthly writing workshops with the basics—notebooks, pens and other creative supplies for those who have very little;
  • $175 — helps bring creative work to life—covering $35 editorial stipends for five poems, stories or works of art published in our publications;
  • $350 — supports a small run of creative work, from workshop to page, helping cover materials, editing and getting contributors’ writing into print;
  • $500 — supports a full creative writing workshop, including facilitation and stipends for participants to share their time and work.

Voices of the Street Anthology Launch Event

Join Megaphone for an evening of storytelling, creativity and community at the 16th annual Voices of the Street literary anthology launch.

  • Date: Thursday, May 14, 2025 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm
  • Location: Simon Fraser University (149 W Hastings, Vancouver)
  • Tickets: Available online

The night will feature live readings from contributors, opportunities to connect with writers and the official release of this year’s anthology. The theme, How to Be Human, explores the shared experiences that help us stay human in an increasingly inhumane world—through poetry, prose and artwork. This year’s artwork and cover were designed by a Megaphone vendor, making this a community-centred anthology from start to finish!

Miss604’s Rebecca Bollwitt is proud to be a monthly columnist for Megaphone, since 2021.
