What Happened
Here’s what is known so far, courtesy of the CBC who has had incredibly compassionate coverage over the last 24 hours:
- Police say nine people were killed and at least 25 more were injured after a mass shooting Tumbler Ridge, a town of about 2,500 people in northeastern BC.
- Update: RCMP say that nine in total are dead, eight people from the school not nine as previously reported.
- Six victims were found dead inside the high school and another died on the way to the hospital, according to authorities. Two more people were found dead in a home, which police believe is connected to the school shooting.
- Tumbler Ridge Secondary School is a Grade 7-12 school with about 160 students.
- The sole suspect was also found dead inside the school from “a self-inflicted injury,” according to police.
- Police have not released details about the victims’ identities, including their ages, citing privacy and a need to confirm and notify families first, as is standard practice in British Columbia.
- Video from the RCMP press conference this morning. Their official newsroom is here.
Dignitaries from around the world have offered condolences and support, and the flags at all federal and provincial buildings are at half mast for the next week. Our nation is in mourning.
