Free Gardening Workshops in Richmond

by Rebecca Bollwitt

You can take part in free gardening workshops in Richmond, from now until October, that not only teach you pruning and planting tips, you’ll also be contributing to a garden that provides fresh produce to local charities combatting food insecurity.

Now entering its sixth year, the Lansdowne Centre Food Garden program continues to support the local community by growing fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are donated to local community organizations and the Richmond Food Bank Society, helping address food insecurity in Richmond.

The program also offers free weekly gardening workshops, where participants can learn practical gardening skills and growing techniques from local experts. Since launching in 2021, the Food Garden program has donated nearly 3,000 pounds of fresh produce to local organizations serving families in need. It is also a great opportunity for children to learn where the food comes from.

Last year the program expanded to support the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program under The Health and Home Care Society of BC (Care BC), while continuing its donations to the Richmond Food Bank Society.

The workshops take place every Thursday from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in the southeast parking lot near T&T Supermarket, running until October 2026. There is no need to register in advance.

Open to all ages and skill levels, each session features hands-on instruction on home gardening techniques and seasonal planting tips. Crops grown in the garden include beets, carrots, fennel, broccoli, potatoes, garlic, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and more.
