Decisions, Decisions

Every day, our lives pull us in all directions. Every day, we have many, little decisions that we make, often without even noticing. Studies suggest that adults make a whopping 35,000 decisions, every day! That’s a lot of decisions.

Every day, Covenant House Vancouver (CHV) sees how life-changing decisions can be out of the control of those who become homeless, precariously housed, or newcomer youth. Decisions such as family rejection, family abuse, or unsafe communities/countries for those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+.

For these youth, their decisions then become reactionary, based on survival, such as fleeing to another country, or living on the street.

From there, these youth, who are in survival mode, have daily decisions to make:

  • Where is a safe place to sleep?
  • How can I protect myself? My things?
  • Where can I find food and water

Vulnerable youth also make brave decisions. Decisions to overcome their situations and pursue the lives that they wish for themselves.

Supporting Decisions

For vulnerable youth, age 16–24, CHV is there to support their decisions to follow their dreams.

No matter where youth are at in their journeys, CHV has a Continuum of Care to meet their needs. From the Drop-In Centre, where youth can get a hot meal, rest, shower, do laundry, and connect to an array of services, to the Rights of Passage program that teaches youth the skills needed for independent living in the community, CHV can help youth escape the streets.

Whatever youth decide, CHV is there to help with:

  • Mental health support
  • Health and fitness opportunities
  • Spiritual and community spaces
  • Educational and vocational training

CHV works with other community organizations to enable every youth to receive the support that they need.

Your Decision Can Have a Lasting Impact

In a world that pulls us in all directions, our choice to care matters most.

From now until June 30, CHV is running their Double Match Campaign, so that your decision to care will have twice the impact in helping youth pursue the futures that they want for themselves.

Thanks to the generosity of the Wubs Family Foundation, every dollar that you donate to support youth will be matched.

For example: an $8 donation to CHV provides 1 hot meal for a youth. Thanks to our match partner, that $8 donation becomes $16, which provides 2 hot meals for a youth.

Last year, CHV provided over 160,000 nutritious meals for young people. A meal is more than food. It’s:

  • An opportunity to connect with other youth and trained staff
  • A feeling of comfort and belonging
  • A chance to rely on a routine and know that there is a next meal
  • A healthy, nutritious way for youth to care for themselves

Because of you, a young person can feel welcomed, cared for, and no longer alone.

Because together, we can take care of each other.
