Free Watershed Tours in Metro Vancouver

Metro Vancouver manages three protected watersheds to provide over three million residents with a clean, reliable, and affordable supply of drinking water. These watersheds cover an area of land 150 times the size of Stanley Park and are closed to protect our water supply from human disturbance. As a result, approximately 60,000 hectares of forested land provides a significant amount of space for numerous species to exist in their natural habitat. The health of these ecosystems is an important natural asset to our region; one that contributes greatly to the health and vitality of the place we call home.

Thanks to Metro Vancouver’s protected watersheds and water treatment, we have some of the cleanest tap water in the world. Bringing a reusable bottle not only helps reduce waste but also celebrates the local water system you’ll be learning about on your tour.

Metro Vancouver’s Watersheds

The Capilano watershed overlooks the majestic Capilano reservoir. Join the tour guide for a journey into this protected watershed to explore unique landscapes, visit the Cleveland Dam, the historic Settling Ponds, and Rodgers Lake (an alpine reservoir that feeds into the Capilano River). You’ll learn all about the history of the region’s water supply, quality, treatment and how it gets to your home.

The Coquitlam watershed tour is surrounded by old growth trees, a historic water intake tower, the dam, and breathtaking views of our largest reservoir. Through short presentations, you’ll gain a whole new appreciation for the region’s water supply, quality, treatment, and the role of a healthy ecosystem in maintaining our exceptional water quality.

Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve is offering family watershed tours to teach all about where your water comes from through games and activities. The tour guides will help you explore big concepts in some of the most beautiful parts of the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. After a bus trip all the way up to the Seymour Falls Dam and walk along the lower river through a section of forrest, families can explore the plants and animals that call this place home and learn how we all share the precious resource that is water.
