Asian cuisine takes centre stage at Chef Series | February 2 and 9, 2025
With food an integral part of Lunar New Year celebrations, Metropolis at Metrotown has invited some of BC’s top chefs to demonstrate their techniques. Each chef will take the stage in the Grand Court to share dishes representing their heritage and culinary philosophy, exploring the ways food contributes to memorable Lunar New Year traditions. Enjoy presentations from: Quang Dang, formerly the executive chef of West Restaurant and D.I.C.E.D and current proprietor of QD Catering & Hospitality; Katy Cheung, a sous chef for over five years at MICHELIN starred Burdock & Co.; Canthy Yen who served as a personal chef to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and was the 2024 winner of Top Chef Canada, currently the executive chef at Bacaro; and Haan Palcu-Chang who appeared on 2024 Top Chef Canada, currently runs cooking workshops, caters private dinners and events, and runs food-related initiatives on Salt Spring Island.

Watch a traditional Lion Dance | February 1st
A colouful Lion Dance will come alive once again in the Grand Court. Dancers will split into two teams to parade throughout the centre, chasing away evil with their lively music. During the performance, the God of Fortune will hand out red envelopes to lucky shoppers, each containing various food offers.

Learn the Lion Dance’s moves | February 1st from 11:30 to 12:30pm
New this year, a Learn How to Lion Dance workshop presented by Bak Mei Kung Fu and Lion Dance – a local business teaching traditional kung fu and Foshan-style lion dancing to students of all ages – will take place in the Grand Court. The workshop is rooted in martial arts movement with fitness-forward lion dance moves. Participants of all skill levels are invited to join.

Cultural Workshops | February 6-9 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm
The Chinese Canadian Museum is contributing to this year’s Lunar New Year Celebrations with a series of free educational workshops. Activities include an abacus learning station, family tree colouring sheets, lantern-cutting, and opportunities to practice Chinese phrases. The workshops will take place on the ground level of Metropolis at Metrotown located near Fossil. On February 1 from 11:00am to 3:00pm, catch a special workshop as local artists join the celebration to lead craft-making workshops, including lantern making (by folding red pockets into origami) and calligraphy.
