Funds raised at the event go directly towards trauma-informed, no-barrier counselling programs that Dan’s Legacy has available for youth at-risk in New Westminster and across Metro Vancouver.
The organization’s therapists, social workers and outreach workers go directly to the youth wherever they are. They embed their therapists in local community organizations, making it even easier for the youth to find them. The head office and Dan’s Diner social enterprise are located in New Westminster, and locally they’re working directly with Aunt Leah’s Place, the Purpose Society, Union Gospel Mission, and Burnaby Neighbourhood House in the community next door.
Dan’s Legacy is a growing organization gaining a significant presence in the Lower Mainland. They are very proud to be able to work with 16 community organizations, including their most recent partner the Lower Fraser Valley Aboriginal Society of Langley.
Why Surplus Food?
This fundraising event is like no other, in many ways, but a big standout is that it uses surplus food. These is perfectly good items that have been discarded by local stores – and you will love the gourmet dishes the guest chefs prepare for this event!
Dan’s Legacy collects around 15,000 kilos of food from a variety of sources each year. In 2023 alone, Dan’s Legacy diverted nearly 190,000 kilos of food from landfills. This eliminates approximately 488,200 kilos of CO2 emissions and is the equivalent to roughly 300,000 meals.
From FoodMesh: “Currently, Dan’s Legacy collects donated surplus food from six grocery stores and distributes the products to 11 community partners that operate food banks or soup kitchens in Metro Vancouver. Beyond these initiatives to divert food from landfills, Dan’s Legacy also takes a proactive approach to mitigating food waste by teaching their youth clients how to repurpose it. For example, in their Cook Training Program, youth learn basic cooking skills and how to utilize all of the ingredients, reducing the amount of food that goes to waste. Participants also learn small restaurant operations and the importance of inventory management to reduce leftovers and spoilage.”
Get your tickets now and join us for an evening where you can see all of these initiatives in action, and have a fabulous time!
