Cancer Research Society’s Read for the Cure

This fall, Read for the Cure 2020 will be hosted from Vancouver virtually on November 4th. This is a national event series from the Cancer Research Society, presented by Penguin Random House Canada, which harnesses a collective energy and passion for reading to raise money for essential research into the environmental links to cancer.

The first west coast edition of Read for the Cure 2020, hosted by CTV Vancouver news host Mi-Jung Lee, features Cherie Dimaline, Lara Prescott, and Ian Williams. This exclusive online event gives you the unique opportunity to hear the stories and perspectives of three incredible authors all while supporting the Cancer Research Society. 

Three Books. Three authors. Three stories.

Cherie Dimaline’s young adult novel The Marrow Thieves shot to the top of the bestseller lists when it was published in 2017 and stayed there for more than a year. It won several awards including the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Kirkus Prize in the young adult literature category, the Burt Award for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Literature, was a finalist for the Trillium Book Award and, among other honours, was a fan favourite in the 2018 edition of CBC’s Canada Reads. Empire of Wild was named Indigo’s Best Book of 2019.

Lara Prescott received her MFA from the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas, Austin. She was previously an animal protection advocate and a political campaign operative. Her stories have appeared in The Southern Review, The Hudson Review, Crazyhorse, Day One,and Tin House Flash Fridays. She won the 2016 Crazyhorse Fiction Prize for the first chapter of The Secrets We Kept. She lives in Austin, Texas. The Secrets We Kept was an instant New York Times bestseller, and a Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club Pick. 

Ian Williams is the author of Reproduction, winner of the Scotiabank Giller Prize; Personals, shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Robert Kroetsch Poetry Book Award; Not Anyone’s Anything, winner of the Danuta Gleed Literary Award for the best first collection of short fiction in Canada; and You Know Who You Are, a finalist for the ReLit Prize for poetry. He was named as one of ten Canadian writers to watch by CBC.

About Read for the Cure

Since its inception, Read for the Cure has raised over $1.6 million for research into environmental cancer. The original event was founded in 2007 by a Toronto-area book club to connect readers and writers to raise funds for cancer research. It has gone from a single event in Toronto, to a national event spanning five cities in Canada, and now that it has gone virtual, readers can participate from the comfort of their home.
