An Evening to Conquer Oral Cancer
byAn Evening to Conquer Oral Cancer is coming up next month in support of the BC Cancer Foundation. It aims to increase awareness about oral cancer and raise funds for putting cutting-edge research into action.
Oral cancer is one of the major human cancers (more common than cervical cancer) with one of the worst survival rates of all cancers. Even among survivors, treatment can be disfiguring and debilitating. Oral cancers are unpredictable and may affect the throat, mouth, and tongue. Currently, oral cancer is often identified late and is usually at an advanced stage by the time it is noticed by either patients or medical professionals. However, if caught early, patient survival rates can be significantly improved and chances of disability from treatment are much lower.
An Evening to Conquer Oral Cancer takes place Thursday April 25, 2013 at 6:00pm (registration) and 6:30pm (cocktail reception and silent auction) at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. The reception will be followed by dinner at 7:00pm then a live auction along with entertainment from The Agency Girls and a special “up close and personal” appearance by Colin Arthur Wiebe. CTV Morning Live’s Norma Reid will be the MC for the evening.
Last year, The Province’s Fred Lee named it the “Most impressive inaugural event of 2012” and 2013 won’t disappoint. Tickets are on sale now for $400 per person or $3,200 for tables of eight.

Great event to attend by taking my Aunt for she had cancer &beat it.
As I am doing a large part of my dietetic internship at the BC Cancer Agency, and working with patients with these high risk oral cancers, I would love to have the chance to attend this fundraiser.
Thank you for raising awareness around this devastating form of cancer. There is not enough awareness of it, resulting in later stage diagnosis. The surgical treatments leave people physically and emotionlly scarred–if they survive at all. My mother died from oral cancer when she was 21, after several surgies. It steals so much from you: your voice, your face, your identity, your life…and still so little is known about it and how to stop it. This is the first fundraiser for oral cancer I have ever seen, and I will be supporting it whatever way I can. I’m not leaving this comment to enter a contest, but to ask others to please consider a donation. I hope this event is extremely well attended and supported. Huge thanks to all of the organizers!

Oral cancers don’t get the same recognition or donor support that other cancers do. I’m glad there’s a fundraiser that will bring these important issues to light and help raise much needed funds.

What a great event! We don’t talk about Oral Cancer much but it can sneak up and get you in no time. It would be lovely to attend and raise money and awareness for such a serious yet neglected type of cancer. I should ask friends in dental school to get involved in this, too. Pick me please 🙂

Seeing that cancer is the leading cause in premature deaths and that on average every three minutes someone is diagnosed with cancer in Canda these types of benefits create greater awareness about all types of cancer and help fund research so that cancer hopefully in the future will just be history.
