- Saturday, September 29, 2012: Lebowski Bash Vancouver: The Big Lebowski
- Sunday, September 30, 2012: Back to the Awesome Night: Back to the Future I, II, III
You may have these films on DVD, you might have them listed as favourites on NetFlix, and you might have caught them outdoors during a Stanley Park summer movie night. You know all the best quotes so what would be better than seeing these flicks in the theatre with hot buttered popcorn and fellow fans? Soundtracks will be blaring, you can show off during trivia time, win prizes, and enjoy themed snacks and drinks.
This festival’s concept will be new to Vancouver by way of Australia. The idea to open a Retro Cinema Fest in Vancouver came to former theatre usher Ronald Tucker, originally from Canada, while working at the Orpheum Picture Palace in Sydney Australia’s North Shore. Starting with the roll-out of the Sydney Retro Cinema, Ronald and his business partners knew immediately they were on to something brilliant. “One of my favourite past times is getting together with old friends to celebrate classic films,” says Tucker. “The aim of Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest is to get film lovers from all over the province to come together and celebrate these classic films in true retro style.”
Catch the double-headers, triple-headers, and theme nights for $20 and two special events for $25: The Lebowski Bash and the Priscilla Queen of the Desert Drag Contest.
Tickets are now available online and showtimes for each day are posted. You can purchase a full Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest pass for all screenings and events for $149. Follow the festival on Facebook and the Denman Cinemas on Twitter and the tag #VRCF on Twitter for more information. Denman Cinemas are located at 1779 Comox Street just off Denman in downtown Vancouver.

I would LOVE to be able to take my man to the Big Lebowski night – he is a huge fan, knows the movie almost word-for-word, wears the Lebowski t-shirts I have given him more than any other clothing and is such an awesome, giving person, I would love to surprise him. What can I say? The Dude Abides. 🙂
Fabulous Friday: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Just to be Fabulous! 🙂
As two kids growing up in the 80’s, the entire reason my friend and I got into the film industry is a direct result of Jim Henson’s films “The Dark Crystal” + “Labyrinth”. I’m a Skeksis-adorin Dark Crystal man and she’s a Jareth the goblin king (and crazy cod-piece-wearing) Bowie fan. We got in to late though, when digital work took the place of stellar practical artwork + puppets from Henson’s imaginative worlds, SO! the idea of going to the Tuesday, September 25 – I Heart 80’s – Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal retro-film extravaganza would be a true blast from the past for both of us and will have the bonus of us getting to freak out the locals at the theatre when we come dresses as our favs from the films. Btw, your retro-theater night here in VA is (as a buddy of mine says often)…..”SpecTACULAR”!
I’d definitly pick Tarantino Night.
I would love to go to the Big Lebowski night. I have never seen this movie and when friends find out that I have not they are absolutely shocked so I would love to take it in and see what all the cool kids are talking about.
You’re going to make me pick ONE?? EEK!!! I have two but being the 80’s geek that I am, I’ll have to go with “I Heart 80’s”. 🙂
it really is an opening I can’t refuse! Wouldn’t miss a chance to see the Godfather I&II in theaters back-to-back
No question that *I Heart 80’s: Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal* has the greatest appeal as it was these films I remember with great joy watching with my mom, who has since passed away. Therefore the opportunity to see them BOTH in the same night, is just an added pip. One I wish my mom were still here to enjoy with me.
I Heart 80’s: Labyrinth & The Dark Crystal
Back to the future..

I like that he comes home to Vancouver from time to time and has not forgotten that his roots are deep here..
You can tell that he is made up of some good stuff..
One of the first movies that my eldest girl remembers and still adores is back to the future..I would love to make my soon to be 20 year old smile..
Godfather. Love these movies and always wished I had seen them in the theater.
Dude, the Big Lebowski is the Kingpin of bowling movies!

Fabulous Friday: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

I would totally love the Lebowski Night!!
Would love to go to opening night for the Godfather!
Back to the Awesome night! My husband owns these movies and watches them obsessively. It’s become a rather bad joke.
The Lebowski Bash, of course!
The Big Lebowski but only if Jesus will be there to share a White Russian with me.
